Hi all,

Im looking for some advice please. Ive never owned a RR but Im thinking of getting one (brand new) on a 3 year lease. Im looking at the 3.0 litre diesel SDV6 - however its not too late for me to change to the equivalent petrol if i wanted to.

The question is, do I stick with diesel or change to petrol?

Things to know: I drive around 7,000 miles a year. Average speed across the year is 17mph. Low figure due to when im in traffic or slow crawling driving to/from work. So as you can tell by the average speed, primarily I drive on A & B roads with some slight M road driving every now and again. My commute to work begins with 10 mins constant at 50mph, then 30 mins stationary to 10mph, 5 mins at 30mph, then 5 mins 10mph again. opposite sequence back home.

Now.....Im not a massive car enthusiast, and im not interested in the roar of the petrol, or the slightly more smoother drive on a petrol, or the power. ive driven diesels for the past 8 years so Im used to them and don't mind them. Ive test driven the diesel engine and am really happy with it.

My main interest here is cost saving on fuel. Would my fuel costs over the year be cheaper with diesel compared to petrol?
My figures/calculation say yes, but I just want to be sure. Am I missing something?
Because of my driving style, will my fuel economy in a diesel be worse than in the equivalent petrol?

Please help as i only have a week to change my mind on the engine if I am going to change.

Test drive a 5.0L S/C and I think that will make your mind up. 7k a year not worth bothering with a oil burner.

I agree with Col,,,,I’ve had 5 sdv6 & now I have the 5.0sc as I only do about 6k a year I only use it at the weekend,,only time I would go back to a diesel is if my mileage went up but I would go for the sdv8.

Are you looking at the 3.0 or 5.0 petrol?

What is the difference in lease cost over the diesel - that may make the fuel cost moot (petrol having a lower GMV at 3 years in most PCP calculations, despite a higher price). The SVR GMV is rediculously low (or the dealers are making a huge margin on 2nd hand stock). RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

Your usage pattern is not optimal for a diesel, to say the least. They don't like lots of urban work.
My vote would be petrol. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

With that sort of usage you are looking at DPF regen issues and big adblue consumption with any of the diesels. Either of the petrols or the coming Plug In Hybrid with a 2 litre turbo petrol would be better for your mileage and lots of city/stop/start driving. I would say the PHEV would be ideal in those conditions especially if you have offroad parking at home where you can recharge it over night. The lack of shove of the 2.0litre petrol isn’t going to be an issue for you driving mostly in town either. The problem with the hybrid is getting hold of one!
