Buying Advice

Hi Everyone
I have in mind to purchase a second hand RR Sport V6 256Hp HSE MY2012 with 91000Km on the clock
my questions are mainly related to how reliable is the this type of engine ?
i've heard rumors that some owners had the complete engine replaced under warranty, and this is what's holding me back
can someone please explain the main reason and what arethe issues and root cause ?
At present i own a MY2001 Disco 2 TD5 which touch wood has never let me down and always started at first ignition
i do most of the simple routine maintenance no offroad but iv'e now in mind something more comfortable to drive
Any advice welcome
Thanks in advance
Vince

They aren't rumours.

The crankshaft can snap on the v6 diesels from 2004 onwards

In fact newer cars with low miles are more suceptable.

There are instances of crank failure in Land Rover's TDV6 / SDV6 engines but in reality they are fairly rare when one considers how many units they have sold since 2004.

If you have to have diesel, consider the TDV8. With care, these are pretty bullet proof. Again, there are some issues but it's very rare for it to involve the engine needing to be replaced.

Otherwise, go petrol. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi Andy
What's the reason for the crankshaft to blow ? lack of oil or bad material design ?
is there any solutions to avoid this from happening ?

The old 2.7TDV6 goes because the crank bearing shells rotate which blocks the oil entry - result is seizing/snapping of the crank.

The 3.0TDV6 and SDV6 seem to just fail at random. ISTR reading somewhere (on disco3.co.uk perhaps) that the cause was to do with inconsistent depth of the surface hardening of the crank. There's obviously nothing much the user can do about that other than keep it serviced and hope.

As already stated, the reality is that the rate of these failures is low when compared to the sheer number of these engines out there. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

If you look on any forum for any car you will find some Achilles heel subject and for those that suffer it it is a significant issue. However, the instances of it occurring are always very rare.

I have had 3 SDV6 3ltr engines, done loads of miles in them and none of them have ever missed a beat. Because they have DPFs (after 2010) and the odd one before when it was an option, you must change the oil regularly, I do it every 6 months and you must use the correct oil.

It’s a good engine, but don’t lose sight of the fact that reading forums will always connect you with people who have, or have had, problems. It’s what forums are for, getting help and advice, but don’t ever think everyone has problems.

Yes all cars have their design faults.

Rarely do they result in such a major and expensive repair.

To make matters worse there isn't a design fix or preventive maintenance that can be done!

Porsche - IMS bearing failing on Porsche 996, Boxster 986 or a very early Boxster 987, Cayman 987 or 3.6 or very early 3.8 997, for example.

Quote:
There is no obvious pattern to the failures in terms of mileage, with some owners unfortunate enough to experience IMS problems at less than 20,000 miles and others thinking they were safe only for the bearing to fail at 130,000 miles. In short, if you own or are planning to buy one of the models with the weaker bearing used from 2000 to late 2005, you need to be aware of the potential for problems.

BMW timing chain failures affecting 1-, 3- and 5-series vehicles resulting in engine replacements. BMW dealt with it "on a case by case basis" and if you didn't have a BMW service history then tough luck pal.

It's not something unique to LR, that's for sure. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I assume BMW have an upgraded chain now though ?

Presumably. LR are doing the same by designing and building their own engines after many years of buying in Ford lumps. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
