Recent trip (picture heavy)

About 10 days ago I returned from a ski/snow trip (Austria/Italy/Switzerland). Tons of snow and obviously bitterly cold given the time of the year. We were out and about in temperatures as low as -18 WITHOUT factoring in the wind chill. I'm so glad I put on winter tyres despite the all seasons I had on it complying with legal requirements. Had I left the Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres on, I would have undoubtedly needed to use the snow chains that just stayed in the boot throughout the trip, thanks to these Vredestein Wintrac Extreme S tyres. Even with those tyres, going downhill on ice and snow over long distances wasn't easy. In fact HDC also struggled a bit on some occasions and there were some scary moments. It is a heavy beast after all!

Other than the adaptive cruise/forward alert radar getting blocked twice during motorway driving under heavy snowfall (understandable) and passenger airbag light randomly staying on once, until the next restart (not so understandable), the car was a pleasure to drive as usual. I covered close to 900km the first day and nearly 1,000km on the last day but it didn't tire me at all - it never does. On the last day driving back home when we stopped for lunch, I realised we had covered the equivalent of London to Edinburgh distance non-stop. It honestly didn't feel like that to me!

Some photos of the car from our trip ...

You mentioned snow chains I was wondering how the would go as I have very little clearance between tyre and chassis. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Correct. Conventional snow chains aren’t suitable. I bought the type that are especially designed for vehicles with limited or zero clearance. LR also sell them (at a huge mark-up), made by companies like Thule (I think model is called Konig) and Spikes Spider so you can buy direct from them or retailers other than LR. For this car I bought an unknown (to me) brand as they are not all metal but polyurethane and can be used on the road as well over a little distance. The idea is that you don’t need to take them off as soon as you are out of deep snow. Didn’t need to use them though. Here’s the link to what I bought: https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel...p;TID=1609 Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Thanks for the info, thinking of a snow trip in the Australian winter and current chains would not fit. Love the pics by the way, great seeing someone use the car for what it is designed for. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
