United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Sumatra Black
Range Rover Sport Crankshaft Snaped, seized engine!!

Hi All, just after some advice?? I have a Range Rover Sport Autobiography MY2012 with a 3.0 SDV6 seized engine
whilst traveling at Approx. 65mph the car suddenly started Violently stopping for what felt like 2-3 seconds then silence and it started to free wheel, fortunately I managed to get the car to a safe area without injuring myself or others, the car has been diagnosed (by the main dealer) with the dreaded snapped crankshaft, I have read on all the forums about the Crankshafts failing due to “incorrect location of the main
bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use” on the 2.7 & 3.0 TDV & SDV6 and both service bulletin`s SSM 72928 & Service Bulletin SSM 71816 which Range Rover have issued to their service centres, I have been in talks with the Garage I purchased the car from some 6 months and 2 weeks prior for the sum of 30K and also in talks with Jaguar land rover customer services, which have just offered of good will of 20% off an £18,500 bill for a new engine, as you would expect I have tried to escalate this but have been told 20% is the max they will pay for the following reasons
1 age of car (6 years 6 weeks when the crank shaft snapped)
2 millage (59800 miles when the crankshaft snapped)
3 not having an extended warrantee (although this doesn’t cover the snapped crankshaft)
I didn’t purchase the car from a main dealer as they didn’t have one with the spec I required, I bought it from a very well-known independent I had a 6-month RAC Warranty which run out 2 weeks prior to the snapped Crankshaft
Im at the point now of not knowing which way to turn? do I put the car up for sale as is and take a hit circa £15 or do I put in a used/recon engine cost 5-8k and have the dreaded feeling of every time I drive the car will it suddenly stop again or accept the 20% offer pay 15k for a new engine and just suck it up to a bad experience any thoughts guidance will be welcome??

Think I would get the recon engine fitted then trade it in but not for another Range Rover. This seems to be occurring more & more Sad
You paid £30k with a new engine, cost to you £14800 = £44800 but the car is worth less than £30000
Recon engine £6000 cost to you £30000 + £6000 = £36000 but you don't know how long this engine might last
Sell as is you say £15000 but will you get that or even sell it
With new or recon engine make sure its going to be a fixed price to fit, it can easily creep up by a far bit
Its a dilema, your out of pocket by aa large amount whatever way you go

Sorry to hear about this....... again Whistle

Could it be a possible goer in asking LR to put the engine in for you at the 20% off goodwill and then ask them if they are willing to either part ex for another but obviously your car would be of value as they would have to be confident that the engine is now good. Or do you just want to walk away from the LR brand Question

Either way though it’s becoming a bit Censored Censored the way this is being treated by such a big company.

I hope you get whatever is the best outcome.

Good luck Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Wow that's another really sorry experience, to think of actually considering the ££££'s lost is unjustifiable. If yours is on finance there is a thread on here somewhere where you may be able to argue "not fit for purpose" along those lines, so it may be a clean break. If its not on tick then I simply wouldn't know which way to turn Shocked

I had been placing some hope in that, if they are going to go, they go in the 1st 20,000 miles. Obviously that's misplaced hope.

I have an almost identical car to yours, but with 70,000 miles. I do however have a Warranty Direct warranty which does cover the crank.

When I previously contacted LR to ask what their response would be if the worst happened, they said they would help. If helping amounts to 20% off the price of a new engine (when they're probably making 40% margin) they don't value their customers or reputation very much.

I feel your pain and hope you get it sorted at minimal cost to yourself. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

Thanks for the advice Im thinking recon and sell or PX. and take the hit, I couldn’t keep the car with the knowledge of not if but when the crankshaft will snap again, it’s a shame as I like the car and the brand but with this being a huge problem with the crankshaft snapping and Range Rover doing basically sod all about it, I could never and will never trust another Range Rover, they have lost me and my family as customers
can anyone recommend a good garage to do the work? im in S Wales, it’s hard to trust as the prices vary so much from garage to garage?

Completely sympathise with your situation, it’s a tough break. have the supplying dealer been of any assistance ?!

Will Land Rover warranty a new unit ?! Personally I d push for 30percent off the 18k and swallow it .

It would be good to drop an email to LR's CEO saying just that. If everyone affected by these sorts of major issues did that, I reckon they'd start to listen. They need to realise what issues like this are doing to their long term marketability. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Begs the question, if you fork out for a new engine, will it be a complete engine with all new ancillaries, turbos, oil pump etc. Furthermore will the new engine be of the so called updated spec with mods that stops the bearing shells from spinning Question Question In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Would there be any way to tell if a car sold by a main dealer has had a rebuilt/replacement engine?
Any clues in the engine bay etc?
