As others have suggested, give them a good clean with Autosol but using a tooth brush on the areas around the top edge.

Once you are satisfied with the finish coat them with some AFC50. It is a protector/anti corrosive substance originally used in the aero industry. I did this with mine and maintenance afterwards was just a once a year quick clean up and re-coating since the AFC50 does diminish over time with them being so exposed

Sorry guys only just managed to catch up on the thread! Thanks alot for all your suggestions, I'll see if I can get some autosol on them and try give them a polish up, they are just the original aliminum steps that came with the car, if all else fails I will look at having them powder coated I think.

After reading this thread, popped into Halfords today and bought cheap acid based wheel cleaner as the ally trims on the sidesteps on my car were looking shabby and stained.
Using one of those washing up sponges that have scotchbrite on one side, I soaked it in the fluid and applied a liberal coat on to the strip, then using the scourer side of the spong, gave the strip a scrub. Washed it all off with a water soaked cloth.

Came up like new and was very easy to do.
Will give them a polish next then apply a sealer.

£5 for Turtle Wax wheel cleaner, contains sulphuric acid so I used latex gloves, didn’t fancy acid burns on my hands

+1 for this, acid based wheel cleaner brought them up a treat. Now got a coat of sealant on them so see what they are like next wash.

I used Wonder Wheels wheel sealer. Didn’t spray directly on to the strip, I soaked a cloth with the spray and did one single wipe along the aluminium. It takes a long time to go off so best not applying it when it’s about to rain, apply under cover if you can.

The product has rave reviews on lots of websites, Auto Express for example. I use it on my wheels and it is very good, lasts a long time.
