OIL LEAKING

Just got home and noticed lots - and I mean lots - of oil dripping from my 2005 2.7TDV6. The whole chassis, exhaust, and rear of car (tailgate, reg' plate etc) has been oil-splashed I only did a few miles this morning, no knocks, just gentle driving around town. No loss in performance or warning lights. Completely out of the blue. Will take it in to my 'indie' tomorrow to see if they can identify exactly where it's leaking from and make it all better. It SEEMS to be coming from front end, maybe back of the engine.

I've looked at previous posts and read everything from worn plugs & seals, transmission box, diffs... just seems really strange it happened so suddenly.

Any initial thoughts / experiences truly welcomed.

Thanks. Barrie.

Front crank seal. I'd strongly advise against driving it if the oil leak is that bad...

Thanks Mikey. I appreciate your getting back to me. If it is what you say, how much am I looking at to get it done at my good 4x4 inde'? Barrie.

Update and Result.

Got the car recovered to my local inde' (West 4x4 at Waltham Chase) today.

To those interested, as our learned friend Disco Mikey said it WAS the front crank seal.

This had been replaced as part of a major service just 11 weeks ago and is therefore fully covered by West's Service Warranty.

Apparently mine is the second car in a short space of time to have had such a failure and Wests have traced the fault to the front crank seals they have been (recently) using and have today changed their supplier. West 4x4 are also now recalling all cars where they have fitted these seals and are replacing them accordingly. The seal itself had warped its way out of the housing.

I'm picking the car up tomorrow once they've cleaned off the chassis etc.

And it could have been a hell of lot worse as in 6 weeks time I take it to Portugal for good! I can't imagine the grief this would have caused had it happened while tanking it along the French motorway laden with wife, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Shocked

Thanks again Disco Mikey for your prompt accurate diagnosis and response. It gave me a starting point with the garage. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Barrie.

I had a few front crank seals fall out shortly after replacement. OEM parts too, which was rather disappointing...

Changed to genuine, and not had an issue since Thumbs Up
