JLR production figures for 2017

Interesting reading - the figures for Chinese built cars are listed at the bottom of the sheet. Note that the year end figures are way over to the right of the spreadsheet, first column is for December 2017

Why might the Discovery have taken such a hit in sales in 2017? Id have thought that a new model would have increased sales?

Or is it a case of people holding off from buying the run-out of the old model and couldn't get a timely delivery of the new one?

The new Disco doesn't seem to be that well liked. It's not a looker, for a start, and it's pretty expensive when compared to the old one. People are looking elsewhere... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I was surprised sales were only down 13% year on year, considering it was a "short" year for the Disco.
The Sport was down 7% and let's not talk about the Velar! 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

Is it a case that LR are slowly killing the golden goose with madly high pricing compared to the competition, the pricing of accessories too puts a lot of people off - >£1000 for a tow bar and huge mark ups on other bits? Another thing, I know a lot of people were put off the D5 by the pricing compared to the D4 however many have also said that the interior is over the top for a car aimed at being a do it all family car. The uncertainty over snapping SDv6 crankshafts is getting out now and that has put off Disco-Sport and Freelander2 owners from moving up to new or used cars with that engine and a lot of people read what the motoring press said about the last generation of In-Control Touch being slow and dim witted and LR’s inability to put it right on built cars. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Well let’s hope that JLR see the error of their ways...........🤔

Interestingly I see that they have knocked 1% off their finance. How does this even begin to work when the base rate has re entry increased?

Going by postings from one of the American members here, they cannot get enough of them over there, so maybe more than 80% of production of Velars is exported - also remember every dealership in the UK must have at least a dozen in stock either new or pre-refgistered looking for a buyer........ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Let's not go misquoting people -- nobody said "they can't get enough of them" in the USA. I did say however that they haven't been a failure and in the last quarter of '17 they actually sold more Velar's than the Sport (17064 versus 16492). And that is worldwide not just UK and USA. The sales mostly correlate with vehicle pricing if you look at that spreadsheet. I find it amusing how people hate the Velar so much. I ordered an 18 Sport SVR because I want the V8 and bigger size but this Velar is an excellent car. And I know because I've actually driven one. I drove the Velar, Sport and FFRR back to back (and I went there in an Evoque). The Velar is a nice car, but it’s not in the same league to drive as the Sport, though it is in the same ballpark as far as price is concerned at higher specification. If it was 25% cheaper across the board, I may have considered it, had I wanted a slightly raised estate car rather than something with a commanding driving position. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

Agree 100%. The ride height is my biggest issue with it. My second issue is the P380 which makes it faster than my 2010 Sport but I much prefer the feel of the 5.0 V8 and the torque, etc. The Velar reminds me more of my old Audi S4 and S5 than an SUV. And that's not what I really want, hence ordering the SVR. I'm only arguing that it's not a sales "disaster" for LR as the numbers show, and also that it's actually a decent vehicle for many people. Some people actually prefer the smaller size and the beautiful interior and exterior. Although I think it only looks good at the top spec with 22 inch wheels like the First Edition.

Anyway I personally think the D5 must be more of a disappointment for LR. I've only seen one on the road and my city has massive numbers of LR's. I loved the LR4 and the boxy lines but this new design language doesn't seem to work as well with the upright shape of the D5. 2018 Range Rover Sport SVR – Bosphorus Grey

I like the D5 till you look at it from the rear with that number plate to one side,,it would have been better if it had a square plate rather than the oblong one.

A member of the D5 forums has redesigned the tailgate trim with a centred number plate carrier, I wonder how long before LR decide that’s the way to go. Personally I think D5 has dropped in sales over D4’s because it moved too far upmarket for most of the traditional Discovery 3 and 4 buyers who don’t want all the whistles and bells or the luxury leather interior. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I was reading the latest edition of Top Gear magazine earlier today. They have a D5 on long term test and it did not make for good reading.

To begin with they think that it is grossly overpriced. However their big concerns is with the In Control system and the infotainment system. I think that the comment made was “I simply do not trust the vehicle not to go wrong” or something very similar.

Not a good review from such a widely read publication.....
