PC Question..

As we have so many PC experts on here, thought i would ask this question..

Got a new laptop last week, ACER Travel Mate 4061 LCI, and i am going to use this laptop for both home and office work, and hence want to get a docking station for it so i don't wear its screen/keyboard out prematurely..

Had a look around, PC world bunch of useless twonks, went to Comet, they don't sell them (despite having a bunch of employees falling over themselves to help - which was nice.. sorted that finnally at that store..)

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance..

Also while im at it.. getting a PDA for mobile email messaging, spoke to about 5 retailers today, and it seems T MOBILE are currently kicking ass with their connections and also with their packages. Spoke to Jay earlier also, and he reccomended T mobile 'Web n Walk' service, where i can pay:

Monthly charge: £32.50
Inclusive texts: 500 texts
Inclusive texts apply to: Any UK mobile network, at any time.
Unlimited internet browsing and email*

Which seems the best package currently available, so am quite fixed on this unless anyone has any other info..? however as with all packages.. they offer TOO MANY damn phones, so i can't decide, and don't know anyone with the ones im looking at, so unsure what to do..

Also if i plug my phone into my laptop via USB can i connect online via my phone and make use of the 100% time 3g connection that im looking to achieve with T Mobile.. if so thats bloody fantastic!! mobile office here we come..

Any reccomendations on the pda though?
Thanks again in advance..

Kam,

I had a nightmare trying to source a docking station / port replicator for my old ACER TM - didn't get one in the end, as all I could find were USB Port Replicators and not proper docking stations.

I've just had a look on a couple of big disitributor sites for you - they have nothing available Confused

No real need for a docking station, Kam, I wouldn't have said. You're never going to wear the screen/keyboard out. My "home" laptop is an 8 yr old Thinkpad which, as long as I keep the install footprint low, still works and runs like a dream.

Guys.. sorry, just making up my mine on the Phone palm thing, and i think the Nokia E61 is the one im going to get.. but the package of unlimited internet/email browsing on T Mobile i've jsut realised isn't actually unlimited.. its 3GB of usage.. (considered reasonable usage) per month..

Now im going to be using it to access email on the move via my outlook software POP 3 download, or via internet webmail by logging in with its explorer software.. now is 3GB Censored for that or is it ok? cuz i can pay an additional £20 and have 10gb of usage.. NO IDEA HOW MUCH 1GB Is.. anyone care to elaborate.. T mobile tech phoneline is Censored ..
But small print reads as follows:

"Web 'n' walk Plus plans

T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data use (both sent and received) of up to 3 GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 3GB of data to ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced following a request from T-Mobile and/or where use of internet phone calling is detected, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission.

Web 'n' walk Max plans

T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data use (both sent and received) of up to 10 GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 10GB of data to ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced following a request from T-Mobile, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission."

Thanks in advance..
And shame i can't seem to fine a docking station either, mlines that one looks a but on the pricey side, its like 1/2 of my laptop price.. (got mine cheap used from a friend in pakistan). But thanks anyway..

Kam

It depends on what your email profile is like. If it is mainly business orientated mails which tend to be text based then 3GB is loads and will be fine.

If it is more personal email with a lot of html content, pictures, videos etc then 3Gb can be reached more easily but depending on the capabilities of the phone/POP3 server it is usually possible to tell them not to download large attachments to the device, just download the headers and text.

The same with the web browsing function, standard sites with graphics that do not change often are fine (ie, corporate sites) but personal webspace with videos and non-resized pictures (or YouTube) can rack up the bandwidth.

I'd 3GB over the month will be plenty - especially if it's not going to replace your normal laptop/PC based internet usage. If you set all your PDA apps correctly, like Outlook to only download headers etc, you can make your traffic profile even lower.

I have a tiny Sony TR1MP - when I am in the office I connect to a wireless keyboard and mouse for ease of use and have external [larger] flat screen monitor - would that replace docking station need...?
