After hitting a pigeon at motorway speeds on the drive down to the Beaulieu LR event recently, I needed a new screen. The impact caused an existing small stone chip to crack across the near side of the screen.
Duly phoned Autoglass, advised them that I wanted OEM glass. Had the usual discussion with them telling me that my insurance company won't pay for OEM on a vehicle over 3 years old, blah, blah, lie, lie. They say they need to talk to my insurer so I leave it with them. A little later they phone back to say that they're not the authorised glazier for my insurance company. I next phoned the insurance claim line, had a bit of a chat, took the phone number of their authorised company and set about booking the replacement. The firm used is Autowindscreens (https://www.autowindscreens.co.uk/). Can't say I've ever heard of them.
The fitter phoned to say he'd had a cancellation so I could go early if I wanted to. Did so and arrived to find a Pilkington screen on the stand ready for me. Looked at the racks and all of the screens are Pilkington. Enquired about this - "we only use Pilkington, the cheaper stuff is rubbish". Discussed Autoglass's tactics. Wry smile from the fitter. Enough said.
So in summary, if you're getting messed around by Autoglass when replacing a screen, consider using the opposition if you can. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
