Broke down... black smoke, loss of power, won't start

Hi guys,

Hope this is the right place to post.

This problem relates to my 2007 TDV8 pre-facelift and not my newer 2010.

Last week I was accelerating up an incline on a motorway when I lost power. Looking in the rearview mirror I noticed some black smoke. Coasted into the hard shoulder and was recovered by the AA.

Fault codes being read suggested EGR but they have been mapped out so don't imagine it can be that.

AA diagnostics suggested (I think I am remembering correctly) excess fuel pressure when trying to start the engine. It tries to turn over but seems starved of fuel so it splutters for a couple of seconds then dies. AA guy called a RR specialist who thought it sounded like the fuel pressure sensor.

Well I've had that replaced and it still won't work! There is a small amount of black smoke out of the back when you try and start it and it says something about engine problems on the screen when you try.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Still being investigated at our local garage and I'm meeting another RR specialist there in the morning but if anyone has had similar then it may throw some light on it.

England

Worth checking the intake pipes as black smoke and losing power is often attributed to a split hose or poor fitting clip. Sounds like with the codes you have though that there are other things at play, but I'd definitely check the intake pipes as it's an easy fix. Wouldn't cause the car to stall I don't think though. Check the oil level first...

Then try starting with the upper boost hoses disconnected
