Last week on Wednesday evening, while my wife, three toddlers, mother-in-law and myself were sleeping, a gang broke into our house and took the keys to my RRS. They then drove it up the M5 where they proceeded to kill a 49 year old family man who was just getting out of his car which had been involved in an accident seconds earlier. The driver of my RRS fled the scene in a following car. The M5 was closed for 8 hours as a result.

This came as a real shock on a number of levels:
1) My pride and joy had been targeted and likely followed.
2) Murdering thugs had been in my house while the kids were there.
3) They were able to drive my car away so easily without being heard.
4) An innocent family man was killed by my car.
5) The police were convinced it was me.

I have learned a number of lessons which are still just sinking in. Importantly, I think the number one lesson was that it really can happen to me. I had always considered that living out in the country meant that I was protected from this type of incident.

I am now updating the security at my house to make sure that it makes lots of noises and lights up like a Christmas tree when unwanted visitors call.

I'm also thinking about a tracker in the replacement car althugh this would only have acted as a deterrant in this case.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased man and I hope that they find the perps and string them up by their .

Not sure what the reason for posting this was other than to say Watch Out!! or you may end up in the same situation as me!

We have to park our van in front of the RRS at night and we have the Keys in a safe place! Even i have to go out of my way to get them!


We have CCTV at home 8 cameras and that did stop them taking the 645 but we think they did see them! and we can viwe then over the net! RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

In fear of scum taking the keys to my cars they all have Tracker units with driver recognition tags.

Bad news Chomper,i know how you feel to some degree as i have had my old place broken into and it make you feel as though your life has been violated.
Im sure all our fellings go to the family of the dead man and i cannot imagine the devistation that this has caused them.
At least you and your family are ok as previously said its only a car they can be replaced.

Really sorry for your ordeal. I have very strong feelings about the scum that do these sort of things and how lenient the punishments are.

Modern cars are now so difficult to steal that the only real way of doing this is to either break into your house, or confront the owner in a car park etc. There are parts of Leeds where it was commonplace for a while for people to try and get in your car whilst stopped at traffic lights, thank goodness for auto door locking, and I know of one customer we had who had strangers knock at the door and point a gun to his wifes head for the keys to his sierra cosworth 4x4.

A friend is a policeman and always warns against leaving keys on a table near the door, and has done demonstrations where he uses a bent coathanger to fish for sets of keys through letterboxes, which is very easy, and then can use the keys to either get into the house or the car etc.

Don't know much about what to recommend to other members about this, but I know it's not worth your life for your car keys.

I know Jaguar are introducing "Jaguarwatch" which is a tracking system that also allows the police a controlled engine cut off option, I haven't heard if this will be extended to LR, but I guess it will soon - not cheap though - about £1500.
