Just thought I would see how things are going over on their forums but they seem to be down...................... that's the Sunday evening entertainment spoiled, will just have to make do with Top Gear. Wonder if they have been hacked by the 4x4 lobby or the " computers cause global warming" brigade Wink 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I have been on two ships boarded by Greenpeace and I can tell you it is not a nice experience, these guys should be rated along with Al Quaida/ Hamas for fanaticism. The problem is that when they get hold of the wrong end of the stick they will not admit they got it even a small bit wrong.
Some examples: In the mid '80s they were campaigning against ships disposing of untreated sewage at sea. They boarded one of the ship's that the company I worked for then owned and stopped all cargo operations and held it in port at a cost of $30,000 a day.
The company was a high profile British company that had one of the very first environmental policies - we used sewage holding tanks and a biological sewage treatment to process sewage long before it became mandatory and the ship they boarded had this system and it was inoperation. Greenpeace got on the TV news and a heap of publicity for their campaign, the company was seen as being uncaring (nobody bothered to ask about what, if any, sewage treatment was done on their ships and in interviews with the company officials they were always howled down by GP and never got their chance to put their word across). A few days later the master of the GP vessel being used in the demo was prosecuted in Southampton Crown court for pollution of Southampton Water by pumping raw sewage overboard with coastal waters - GP didn't have any form of sewage treatment plant on their vessels at the time! NOTHING was even mentioned on the national news about this.

5 years ago GP started campaigning about Tri Butyl Tin antifoulings on ships' hulls. The company had just taken delivery of a new ship and it arrived in Hamburg on it's maiden voyage to be greeted by GP in their boats. While the ship was alongside the berth, in the middle of the night GP activists came along side and painted a huge skull and crossbones and slogans all along the wind/water line of the ship over it's new antifouling paint. For those of you who don't know Antifouling paint inhibits the growth or barnacles and weed on the underwater hull, the old fashioned and most efficient way of doing this was with toxic paint using TBT as the bio-cide. Growths on the hull slow the ship and result in a higher fuel consumption and higher emissions. What Greenpeace did totally ruined 2 biological antifouling systems - they applied ordinary paint over a silicone polish antifouling (this makes the hull so slippery that nothing can adhere and is nontoxic) and they painted over the sensing heads for a impressed current system that uses tiny electric currents to reduce corrosion and to kill marine growths. These systems are now widely in use but we were using them on an test basic then. For the next 5 years until the coatings could be completely stripped off in drydock that ship burned significantly more fuel than it's 4 sisterships coated with the same systems. Greenpeace NEVER acknowledged that they had selected the wrong ship, they were more interested in hitting a globally recognised name.
When we started to scrap older ships instead of selling them on, the company was again the subject of Greenpeace activists. This time they hit the head office in Rotterdam by scaling the front of the building and then draping a huge sheet of canvass over the building front announcing to the world that the company were sending their ships to India and Bangladesh for dismantling and causing pollution in 3rd world countries. The company was, at the same time, in the final stages of discussion with GP about how to set up their own "green" ship recycling facility in Europe where it would have provided about 250 jobs and led to the re-opening of an old and derelict shipyard. As a result of GP's activities over the front of the office block the company didn't open their proposed facility in Europe, they opened in China instead where they employ Chinese to dismantle the ships and then they ship all the recycled parts back to Europe for remanufacturing and resale, using heaps of fuel and creating more emissions. This company is widely acknowledged as being at the forefront of "green" ship recycling, but not by GP who advised on the whole plant................ according to them we are pariahs who couldn't give a shi*te about the environment. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

We are starting to wind them up a bit! The constant disagreement of their beliefs is starting to bring out the real militant feelings in their most active members. (If kids of 16 can be militant!) 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

You are being generous VA, I wouldn't have rated them as being that old even... I'm a bout to post a link to the Clarkson 1st Edition "how far can you get on a gallon of fuel" that should get them chattering! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
