Newbie - Buying my First RRS 4.2 2006 tomorrow - advice

Hi There,

I dont do many miles a year, 2-3000 and i always liked the 4.2L RRS, always just felt it was a bit thirsty for what i needed. However, i now just work at home, so would be for short trips so petrol MPG not an issue anymore. So i thought i would treat myself to a 70K mile 2006 4.2L in Santorini Black with all bells and whistles on it. Lovely cars and i have always wanted one.

Any advice to someone who knows nothing about RRS's or 4.2L Supercharged variants.

Also, how do i know if the one i am looking to buy is an HSE or HST?? and what is the difference?

Leaving Newcastle tomorrow, for Mansfield to buy, so if anybody has any advice, will gladly listen to it?

Thanks for reading my post.

Scott

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

There's a buyers guide PDF around, print it off and have a read. Service history is vital. Expect any bill from a garage to include the word 'thousand' when it breaks. Check bodywork carefully, black is prone to scratches in car washes.

I'm not trying to put you off, I love my sport.

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

Hello Scott. Main thing is to ensure it has a full service history. Brakes and pads are fairly cheap (even so they are Brembo) if you do them yourself.
Check the Air con and both front and rear heated screens work.
Check the tyre wear as the sc can go through suspension bushes quite quick.
Also if you change camber on a dual carriage way, see how well it sits. If it dance's a bit, may be a sign of worn bushes/ball joints. Also check the suspension holds pressure, it should not be sat on the floor and also should only adjust slightly when the engine is started.

For the money the 4.2 is awesome, the v8 sound is addictive. I loved mine so much I kept it 7 years before finally trading it in. Most of the sc's are fairly highly spec'd, I don't think there is a difference between the HSE and non HSE on the sc(mine was just classed as V8 but had every extra with the exception of TV) but the HST is a body kit.
Hope this helps.
Also probably java black on a 2006. Get one registered before 23rd March 2006 and you will save 200 quid a year Road tax

Great advice, thanks.

When you say, change camber on a dual carriageway, how do you test a camber change? Are you talking about air suspension adjustments whilst driving or moving from 2 wheel drive to 4?? Sorry for my ignorance, just unsure how to test this?

The one i am after has TV's, front and rear, perforated black leather seats and quite low miles. Seller seems to have a lot of paper to back his sale up with, so we will see. As you suggest, they seem pretty fully specc'd. I cant see anything that has not been selected to make this a very well specc'd car. Seems to have the lot.

Cheers

Scott

Cheers D-9, I am prepared for the bills, when they come, all part of the ownership journey i am guessing. Cheap buy in is attractive though, a lot of metal for not much money.

Do you have any links to the purchase - us anoraks can tell a lot from a few pics - Rolling with laughter

I owned a Supercharged for 3 years - it does not come in HSE it's only marked as Supercharged followed later on by the addition of the HST badge which also had the body kit Thumbs Up 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

To me that looks totally untouched from when it left the factory Wink The side steps are obviously fitted after & look like the only negative they should have a chrome edge strip. It has adaptive cruise control - check this if you get chance. The parking sensors get battered day in day out by the elements so again test both forward & reverse.
That is a nice original looking Supercharged RRS Thumbs Up

That's non-HST body kit so guess it's standard SC/HSE.

At least it's being sold by a trader - you have some legal protection if problems start soon after purchase.

Usual advice is make sure everything works several times. Check the low range change works (engine running, select the neutral, press low range). It should be silent except for a couple clicks and takes a couple of seconds to activate. You might not plan to use low range but it should still work. Likewise the EPB (park brake). It should operate without loud screeching and it should hold the car against the engine in drive. If it slips then adjustment is needed NOW. With the engine running, drop suspension to access height and then select the normal height and then off road height. It should be able to do that within a few seconds. If it's slow (or a message flashes up saying it's slow) then a new compressor is probably required. Listen for knocks at low speed on uneven roads. The suspension should be silent - any noise indicates tired bushes. After your driver be, raise the suspension to off road and look under for leaks especially just in front of the rear axle line. A leaking anti roll bar actuator is an expensive fix (£1200+). It's got a sunroof so check front footwells for signs of dampness. The sunroof drains can block and cause water to run into the footwells. There are ECUs on the a-pillar behind the dash so water here isn't great.

Don't get sucked in by the engine's performance. Check it all really well. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The very first Supercharged did not have kits - they was added to the variant a few months into production - as always great advice from RRSTDV8. Check & check again - even post questions on here if your uncertain before you commit.

Good luck. Thumbs Up 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

Superb advice,I will test to the best of my ability. CAn i just ask if the TV's in the back are supposed to come with a remote control and or wifi headphones for kids? One of the big plusses for us is that the kids will be entertained. My first thoughts are that everything works and works well of course. My second thoughts are on general condition ( i dont want it to be tatty), thirdly, all the nice toys, bells and whistles are great but must work. If there is no remote or headphones for the rear DVD's I assume these are relatively cheap to replace?

Thanks again all.

Leaving in an hour to go drive the car.

The test is if there is a slope in the road surface, if the road slopes to the side, and if it grabs as you change surfaces, go around corners, etc. Just drive it and see if it feels right, or if its all over the place.

The suspension cannot really be adjusted while driving, it will automatically raise itself to normal height from access mode when you pass about 10mph and lower itself to normal height from off-road when you pass about 30mph. The RRS is permanently in 4 wheel drive, you cannot set it to 2 wheel drive, you do have a low-range option for offroading, which gives you the usual 6 gears, but much much lower than high-range.

I personally would avoid one with a sun roof. It's not big enough to be of any real benfit and has a nasty habit of flooding the footwells when the drain tubes block. Granted this can be avoided by cleaning them, but again, based on preference I would avoid them.

Check the average mpg and over what distance it has achieved it, this will give you an indication of how it's been driven. If you're buying it from a trader then this may not be as telling due to it being started and left to idle for an hour or so each week.

Pop the bonnet and listen to the engine with the revs at about 1k any rattles at the front of the engine will be expensive (timing chain kit costs £500 and its a 20 hour job to replace them so I've been told). Best to test this when the fan isn't engaged. The v8 is a pretty quite engine so any whines are bad news (ace pump or power steering pump) don't be fooled into thinking that the whine is the supercharger as at 1k rpms and under no load it should be all but silent. Drop the hammer when pulling away and you will hear what the charger sounds like.

Personal preference here but when checking the engine, if it has a K&N filter fitted walk away. The stock air filter has more than enough cfm flow to feed the engine. a K&N says to me that it's been owned by a boy racer and has been driven hard with lots of full power launches from the lights (read new torque converter). This is entirely my own opinion and will surely ruffle a few feathers haha, so feel free to ignore me on this one.

Try putting the gearbox into low range with the window down, there should be a slight click but nothing to loud or strained.

Try doing a few low speed turns at full lock (find a car park somewhere) do a full circle both clockwise and counter clockwise both forwards and in reverse, this should highlight any issues with the diff's or drive shafts.

Try enabling the parking mirrors (when you select reverse it automatically drops the mirrors a few inches to aid parking) select reverse and make sure that both mirrors return to their previous position.

Check the headlight washers work (turn the lights on and then use the front washers).

With it being an 06 ask for proof that the aux pump has been rewired as there was a massive batch that were wired in backwards. If there is no proof ask them to check and confirm that it's correctly wired (as it may have been done by the owner and not a dealer/indi.

Dependant on milage, if it's around the 100k mark you want to see invoices for the gearbox oil being replaced/flushed and you also want to see that the spark plugs have been replaced (they're around £12 each so while not earth shattering there are 8 of them...)

Check the adaptive cruise control and steering controls work as they should, set the speed, distance and adjust both while its working. Test the volume etc. the electrical connection between the wheel and column has a tendency to fail.

Check that both seats can be adjusted and that the heat elements work on the bottom and back of the seat. Both front and rear seats are heated.

Final check would be the park brake. Window down and apply it, there should be a short whirr and a creak as the shoes bite into the drum. It should be smooth and short (maybe 2 seconds or less to apply), work it a couple of times and also try it at various points on the test drive. Also test that it auto releases when you set off.
Any clicking or bangs at any point of testing is a bad thing (there may be a bit of a clunk as the PB releases when you pull away but thats ok).
