As my RRS has almost eaten its way through yet another set of Toyo Proxes I've decided to have a change just for fun and took delivery of four lovely new General Grabber GTs this morning.

The GGs have rim protection (FR code) but I am wondering just how effective this is - can anyone offer me their experience?

BTW - I'm having the wheels refurbed again since they all seem to have picked up kerb rash. There's a local place with a good reputation that will do the refurb at a price £240 and mount the tyres as part of the deal so considering it usually costs about £100 to have 4 tyres mounted it's a no-brainer. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Some tyres are better than others.
The General Grabber GT tyre I have found offers very little protection at all I'm afraid, when I had them fitted.

I've never paid more than £10-£15 a tyre to have them fitted, weighted and balanced.  John

My RRS TDV8 came with 4 new 275/40R20 GG GT's when I bought the car. I can confirm that they are useless at protecting your rims and am thinking of either going to go to a 45 profile or maybe 19" rims.

I caught the NSR against the kerb on Saturday whilst parking. Daft idea to have ever put such a low profile tyre on a range Rover in the first place!

Thanks for the replies. Yes - looks as if the kerbing rib doesn't provide much protection if any. Seems to depend on the shape of the outer rim.

On another car I own the tyre rib protrudes 3-4mm beyond the wheel rim and protects it well. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

If your that worried why not fit some rim protectors like alloygators?

Bit of a late reply - but no I don't want to fit Alloygators because they don't look great and apparently they have a reputation for tearing and lashing around, damaging the paintwork.

Anyway- Wheels now refurbed and General Grabber GTs fitted and all is good, car feels more planted at speed and there is a bit less road noise and smoother ride.

Kerb protection rim as said above though is hopeless. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
