Yeah I think mine starts in 1st.

The tdv6 isn't overpowered so no need to start in 2nd.
Unlike my jag SC which is a nightmare to drive in traffic if using 1st (sport mode). One tickle of the throttle and your in someone's bumper.

I think I know the sound you mean. It does it when on the overrun, or feathering the throttle.

I did find some posts (on here I think) of someone who investigated it, and it was coming from the gearbox, but it wasn't actually causing a problem.
I'll have a rummage and see if I can find the posts..
(Don't forget the gearbox is a ZF item, not Land Rover. Plenty of Audi/BMW's with the same type also have the same problems.)

After a bit of testing I'm fairly certain that my diesel starts off in 1st gear.

Torque converter sorted....all gone...now onto the next fault!!
