THE RANGE Rover is an excellent car; fast, luxurious, well made and capable of bumping smoothly over a grouse moor. It’s so excellent in fact that shortly after you take delivery, it will be stolen.

The problem has reached such epidemic proportions that whenever the police in London are not investigating former MPs and army officers for no reason at all, they are apparently under orders to pull over every Range Rover they see. Because chances are the man at the wheel is on his way to Albania.

I suspect this would take the sheen off the ownership experience; coming out of your house in the morning to find your car isn’t there. Or finding it is there and being pulled over every hundred yards by a policeman who will assume you are rich and that therefore you must at some point have done some inappropriate touching.

So if you are not going to buy a Range Rover, what other choices do you have? Well, only one, I’m afraid. And it’s the new Volvo XC90. And now your shoulders have sagged and you are thinking that if that’s the only other option, you may as well commit suicide.

I get that. As a small boy you didn’t lie in bed at night dreaming of the day you could own a Volvo. It’s something you buy for practical reasons, like a pair of gardening gloves. It’s what you do when you are old and everything stops working down there. It’s just somewhere to sit while you wait for the Grim Reaper to pop his head round the corner and say: “Ready?”

Keep updating us JPR as I for one am genuinely interested in the T8 - the Mitsubishi is great but lacks the luxurious interior I'm used to with RRS Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have had the car for a year in March 2017. I have not issues with the car whatsoever, there was a recall which Volvo actually rang me, collected the car, did the update and delivered back all nice and shiny.

All software updates are done through an app in car so you can check if there are any for maps , local information, car parks shopping etc., The phone APP is brilliant I can turn the heater on and off from it, check mileage, warnings, lock/unlock, flash lights and sound horn in case you lose your 5 meter long car. Must say it never really feels that big, and the self park is excellent in even really tight spots. The safety features I think it was voted safest SUV on the planet last year, so always a bonus. Boot is huge, rear adjustable seat, with amazing legroom I am over 6ft and can virtually stretch my legs out. Front seats are very comfortable with multiple adjustments, one of the main reasons for choosing the XC90 in the end was the seats.
Full panoramic opening sunroof with curtain is great in the summer.

The ride is comfortable with easy access to all controls the centre screen is huge and easy to read, will also plays movies and music videos via the USB in the armrest. The HUD is s very useful when navigating. First service due soon so will keep you informed. Anything you wish to now about especially, let me know. Current Volvo XC90 R Design T8
Gone 2010 TDV8. Stornoway Grey
Gone VW R50, AUDI S8, ML320 Sport, FFRR V8
Stolen 2007 TDV8.
