Aftermarket satnav / stereo upgrades

Hi all,

Brand new to this forum and am just about to treat myself to a new car to replace my Audi TTS (queue boos and hisses, but it's been a great car!).

The trouble is one of the must haves for me is a decent infotainment system, but my budget will only stretch to either 2013/14 Autobiography or a slightly later HSE Dynamic. Eitherway, a MY17 is out of reach and therefore it looks like I am stuck with the much slated older system. For balance, I am also considering a brand new 3.0 V6 F-Pace, but it doesn't quite have the allure of the RRS but the tech does appear to be much better.

So my question is does anybody on here have any experience of changing the unit for an aftermarket set up, with Apple CarPlay for example? Is it possible, has it worked, any horror stories etc?

Your advice would be appreciated.

Pretty sure it's not possible so far on the years that you're looking at as the head unit is so integrated.
You should get BT streaming for music. What else is it you're looking for? Bodsys Brake Bible

You could look for an older RRS2 with the 1700w Meridian system - it was a £4000 upgrade IIRC but will be a rare find if you do find a car with it - probably more chances of finding it in an Autobiography than an HSE. Those that have it say it really beats almost all other in car systems too. I would imagine that it is one of those options that counts for very little at trade in time so you might be in for a bargain if you can find one with it. The 2013/2014MY cars came with an 825w Meridian system as standard IIRC and having had it in 2 Range Rovers, it is pretty good. 2015MY onwards that have the 380w downgrade Meridian and it isn't too bad (I have it in my RRS) but 2016/17MY 180w unbranded system that is standard issue is truly awful for such an expensive car.......... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks Guys,

It is more about improving the clunkiness of the satnav system that people seem to report and moan about as opposed to being able to stream music.

It is sounding like it's something that just might be a compromise on what otherwise seems to be an excellent motor.

Satnav is fine when you get used to it, it isn't the fastest calculating but it is way better than many............ If you use it to route to the same destinations regularly then it stores destinations and is quite a bit faster to calculate routes for those destinations. My brother has a 2014MY A4 AllRoad and reckons the system in my RRS is streets ahead of the upgraded version of the Audi system in the AllRoad if that is any consolation. OK so the LR systems are not a patch on Audi's MMR system and you have to use a slow and low resolution screen and what appears to be a low power processor but it has a better database that covers the whole of the EU and you get TrafficMaster traffic warnings in it as standard. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The LR satnav will get you there, a £150 TomTom will accurately tell you when you will arrive, will warn you about scamera sites, and avoid traffic if at all possible.

ICE upgrades are a huge pain in JLR products. Even to fit JLRs own upgraded sounds is nigh on impossible.

The 850W Meridian (which I think is standard in the ATB?) is pretty good, never saw the value in going further than that. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

It sounds like it's maybe not as bad as I had picked up on the forum and in the reports. I guess it's the expectation of spending £60k + on a car so you'd expect everything to perform as such.

There's always Google Maps!

I have the Mid spec sound system and it is the best in car sound I have ever owned. I have the Bose in the SQ5 and the RRS system is far better IMO. Sat Nav is OK and I use an app for speed camera's. I have had in car android systems that give you e-mail and everything else, but really these are a distraction from driving pleasure in a great car. If you want top sound go for the mid spec or top spec, which personally money must not be an issue if you spec it, and you will find the experience very good.

System is a frustration in that you can't connect Bluetooth music when an iPad is connected, but I have always said I'd rather substance than fluff so I accept that the car misses in some of the not so important areas. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
