My battery is now 9 years old and is getting a bit long in the tooth. Will start the car fine on cold below freezing mornings if I wait for the glow plug cycle but despite owning diesels for over 15 years it is something I still forget and of course the old battery does then have trouble cranking the engine which then fires up with a few fault codes that clear once the engine is running.

So time for a new battery - back in 07 the battery was a calcium battery of about 950CCA and 95 ah. I did ask the battery shop about a new battery a while back and they were persistent in trying to sell me a 700cca battery but I declined.

So in Aust what are the batteries that are now appropriate for my 07 RRS - I had heard that calcium batteries were no long the spec and they are now AGM.

Suitable brands and model number available locally would be appreciated.

I like the VARTA brand. Not sure of the spec for your model , for that matter not sure for my model either. I have had very good service from the brand particularly in Diesel 4WD application. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Thanks for that - googled the relavant Varta battery - has a good 100ah but the 830cca seems a bit light on but it is a AGM vs a Calcium battery. Price is a bit exxy at $495 though.

I might have to investigate a bit further but thanks for the tip.

Looks like it might be the Supercharge battery - I made the mistake of going to Battery World this afternoon and of course their listed battery for a RRS is only 650cca so too small. They had a Varta but they wanted $550 for it where the Supercharge only costs $10 to post.

I wonder though if for a starter battery whether the newer AGMs are better than the old Calcium batteries noting that my 9 year old calcium battery still starts the car if I go through the correct start sequence so there wasnothing wrong with these batteries.

My calcium battery in the BMW X5 lasted 9 years with no issues. Car was designed to operate with these so why change.
I would stick with the calcium.
My RRS battery was replaced under warranty by Land Rover and the battery part number that they installed was the same as the Supercharge battery number (but LR branded). As I say same number for RRS and X5.
Just check the dimensions of the supercharge as there is a high and slightly lower version.

The main reason that I am now also looking for AGMs as well is that (as I understand it) LR now specify an AGM for the earlier RRS replacing the calcium batteries.

if this helps.....I replaced my battery in my disco 4 (which I am confident was the same as in my previous RRStdv8) with a Federal 649MF. This is a silver calcium battery , 900cca rated, 100ah, and American built, not chinese like the supercharge. Same as supplied to LR Australia. I paid $365 3 years ago so may need adjustment accordingly, supplied and fitted by mobile supplier here in Qld. Can't tell you how long it has lasted since I sold the D4 2yrs ago, but I run Federal start batts in my boat (5.9ltr cummins x2) and have had good life and service. Also installed in my 4.2 LCR and going well.

Actually was out looking yesterday - the Battery Factory want $285 for the Suoercharge which I guess is an OK price - their book listed battery whatever it is is only 700cca - too low in my view.

thanks for the advice on the Federal - I will have a look at that.

However the old 9 year old battery is still starting even on - 3 mornings so still got a bit of life in it yet.

just as an extra check, compare the weight of each to indicate how much lead you actually get in the batteries. Thicker plates weigh more but give better service. My data shows the fed to be 1.6kg heavier than the Supercharge MF88h.

Decisions, decisions - the Suoercharge for $285 or the Federal for $350. All agree the Federal is the better battery but is it $65 better?

I was just about to start a thread on the same issue as my Battery in the RRS S/C is starting to show signs of 'old age'.
Don't know how long its been in the RRS & can't read the brand but what I can see it says designed for European conditions and its only 700CCA.
I agree with Garry that 850+ would be good and lots of Ford Territory people are replacing their orginal 700CCA batteries with the Supercharge one mentioned or a Delkor one.
As I buy a few batteries (10 vehicles) I'll check with my supplier and see what they have or recommend and post tomorrow? 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.

-4 this morning and the car fired first go. Drove 15km to the Doctors and started first go and drove back to where I live to get fuel. Refuelled and no initial start - enough to go click click and reset the trip meter eg. Switched off and restarted no issue. Drove the 2 km home and restarted no issue.

Hmmm do I have another issue? - car starts first go when cold but sometimes when driving around and then stopped for a short time, occasionally it is hard to fire up.

Hi all,
Checked with my supplier R&J Batteriesand they recommended 'Hardcore Din 100' which is one of thier own brands I think.
Its an EFB type battery 975CCA & 100amph $305.
or
Delkor LN5 AMG type 900cca &95amph $508.

These were for a S/C RR don't know if Deisel is different.
I am going to have to bite the bullet tommorrow as mine got hot due the recharging process and died altogether. 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.
