Coolant loss

I have a bit of a problem with my Sport TDV6

Its just turned 63k miles and on the way down to the S of F used 1 litre of water and the low coolant light came on.

Phoned LR assistance and they have taken into local Land Rover who have taken 2 weeks to look at it. Sad

They have now stated that the car is ok - I have since driven back to the UK and want me to go and get it!

I am worried that as the exhaust smells of antifreeze when it runs and it used water on a subsequent day that the local agent is trying to get rid of the car.

Any one else had the problem or the need for a head gasket - Some Discos seem to have?

I also dont fancy a catastrophic failure on the way home! -------------------------------------------------

Had very similar problem recently - turned out to be "a pully which was rubbing against a heater hose". Hoses replaced. Used half a pint of water after I picked it up, but not used any since then (6 weeks ago).

HI, IF YOU CAN SMELL ANTI FREEZE FROM THE EXHAUST THEN IT IS MOST LIKELY TO BE LEAKING EGR COOLERS ONE OR BOTH.

Head gasket or new engine after coolant leak

Just wondering if anyone can help/advise me. I have a sport 2.7 diesel. I had a coolant low message on my way back from holiday. i carried on with my journey as temp was fine. suddenly when i went to over take a car it lost power. straight away i looked at the temp and it had gone up to 3/4. i pulled over instantly. Long story short, a pipe had warn thorugh and leaked coolant out. They have fixed and refilled coolant and bleed system but its still pressurising. They are now saying it needs new a engine as the head gasket has gone but they couldn't be sure if anything inside the engine has cause it? any advise? surley they can tell if the engine is o.k apart from the head gasket. i dont want to replace the head gasket and then find something goes wrong and end up replacing the engine.

I have just had the same problem. Coolant loss etc.

I had a new engine put in 7 months ago, so I doubt its the engine.

Coolant is leaking straight out of the bottom. Taken it to a Landrover specialist this morning and he seems to think its the water pump or perhaps the radiator. It could turn out to be just a hose yet tho.

Once I know what it is i'll let you know.

Been a great car this...new rear diff, new EGR valves twice, New engine, near heated rear screen, new parking sensors, new pipes to fit a diesel leak etc etc......

There was also a problem with the sensor and the header tank, there was a TSB about it and had mine replaced under warranty 2 years ago. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

Turned out I had a cracked Intercooler which was now replaced (£500)!

The list goes on....car cost me over £8,000 now since December!

I go away next week and the car is going back in for £1,600 of work, Diffs, Bush's, wishbones, discs & pads etc.......meh!

RRSSteve, I have just rebuilt the whole engine on my rrs and I have travelled only 100 miles and the water light come on and its smoking and using water. could the EGR coolers cause this and if so would it cause the truck to misfire.

I rebuild engines all the time so nothing out the ordinary for me. I could of done something wrong as i am human but cant think of what it could be if i have.

Is there anything to check before i take the body off and start all again

A complete guess, but there are 2 fuel/water heat exchangers on the car.

That would cause coolant loss and misfire wouldn't it?

or if you suspect EGR's then remove the coolant pipes and bypass and run it,
Are the EGR's blanked ?

I dont want to say it but no i didnt get them done.

i took them off my 65k motor that had crank failure and it wrecked the main bearing jernals so i had to get another block.

so i put my old heads on a new block and i didnt skim the heads......... what a Censored i know

Andy, Yes there is one under the starter motor and one inside the middle of the two heads. To be honest i didnt even think of them. I wouldnt think it would be that as i am getting air/bubbles on a constant flow into the water tank. (pipe from radiator)

also it smokes like a train. I is using the water fast. If you hold the trottle at 1500rpm it will clear but as soon as you idol it and touch the pedal it smokes bad.

egr are not blanked. Andy if the egrs ever fail can they cause water to go into the cylinder as if not there no point me removing pipes ect.

im sure its a head gasket now. I should have done the heads. Im going to do a compression test and see where it leads.

From what you say it doesn't sound like the heat exchanger or EGR.
