Who wears winter tyres?

Tomorrow I am swapping my winter tyres and rims over for my summer version. I was wondering how many anglophiles or people of other lands do the same?

Here in Switzerland the majority of folk do this as a ritual and necessity, and winter tyres are fabulous below about 7 degrees c.

Off topic...shameless. I am looking for some of those fancy fan dangly traction spider whatnots for my 20 inchers Razz

I run winter tyres on a spare set of wheels Thumbs Up

But only because my summer wheels are diamond cut, and I can't face them being damaged by the salt and Censored on our roads Evil or Very Mad
If I'm going to have a set of winter wheels, I may as well have a set of winter tyres fitted to them Whistle

I hear you

I really feel the benefit of the winters. They really do stick like p** to a blanket. It also gives me a chance to refurb the kerbed rims during down time.

I have a set of winter wheels and All Season tyres for my RRS2 and have had sets for the RRS's, FFRR's and Evoques that have gone before. Haven't needed to put then on for the last 4 winters as I have been fortunate enough to have spent them in nice hot and sunny countries while the car has sat unused at home. I'm now looking for a set of 21" Ice and Snow tyres to fit on my set of 21" SVR wheels (there are standard SVR issue tyres on them at the moment that look like all season tyres). Winter tyres are not a legal requirement in the UK but when I have been running them, even with Terrain Response GGS setting, they certainly inspire a lot of confidence, unlike the AT's and MT's that I run on my Defender - they are just lethal on icy roads. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I run winters on my spare set of 19s for my Alps ski trips. I think I would run out of ground clearance before I ran out of grip in the snow with terrain response and also being a heavy car, I feel it stops better and is much more predictable around the bends.

I also like the fact that in the really cold temperatures up high if it snows on the mountain roads I'm tooled up for the job! Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I had a separate winter wheel & tyre set for my first L320 and just a separate winter tyre set (to be used on the same wheels) for the second one. Didn't get winter tyres for my L494 hoping to test how the standard all season tyres perform. Unfortunately the conditions around here last winter never got to a stage where I could really tell Sad Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

I'm sure if you did Tim plenty of LR owners would offer to pull her out and she wouldn't need the chains Laughing Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Mine came fitted (in December) with brand new tyres Pirelli scorpion "winter" tyres, don't have a spare set of rims. Have spoken to a tyre dealer & he said they will be fine all year. Don't really want to spend (yet another) 600😡
Any views on winter tyres over the "summer"??

Some owners use them all year round but AA doesn't recommend it

Quote:
Winter tyres are not really suited to all year round use though summer tyres will give better performance when temperatures are higher and roads dry so you'll need two sets of tyres if you're going to choose specialist tyres for winter.

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/safet...the-uk.htm

You could fit all season and sell the winter set to recoup the cost

I've read winter tyres go soft in summer and wear quicker so depending on how much tread left you may end up replacing early Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
