Should i buy an RRS?

Hello everyone, i'm new to this forum as i've recently been looking into RRS ownership and am completely in the dark.
The model in question i've been considering is an 05 (cheap tax bracket) RRS HSE and i'm hoping to gain some knowledge on reliability and warranties. I can imagine these questions have been asked a million times so apologies for the repetition Smile

What're the common issues and faults with these models? I've researched minor details and i've noticed air suspension and general electrics can often be an issue, can anyone divulge on this in regards to costs of repairs/maintenance and how easy it may be to get sorted?

I don't do more than 7-8k miles a year on my daily commute however i do alot of town driving so i need something thats up to scratch as far as reliability goes, im aware of running costs which will be steep for my age (21) however aslong as i enjoy the vehicle it won't bother me too much.. what are RR's like to own in general?

Thanks in advance for any answers or advice Smile

As you say suspension compressor problems, and cleaning out the valves.

The cambelts need doing at 105K miles on the diesel or at a certain age. So this is something to look at. Allow £500? if its not been done.

They are a nice car to drive. But what with the weight, cost of fuel, insurance, running costs, i'm sure you would be better off with something lighter and more sporty. and get your NCB and age up.

Have you got an insurance quote ? Big Cry They are in the top 10 of most nicked cars.

It really helps if you can do basic maintenance yourself.

Looking for any car that's over 10 years old is always a risk. However, use your head, buy one with the lowest mileage and full service history that you can afford. Generally RRS owners tend to look after them and if there were any faults hopefully most would of been sorted for you. As for fuel mines a remapped 2.7 tdi and I'm getting around 28-31mpg, and I'm commuting 250+ miles per week. No major faults, just minor ones such as a squeaky brake, and worn anti roll bar bushes. One common fault that will cost a small fortune is the ACE bars if it has the dynamic suspension, the actuators start to leak and can cost around £1500 each to replace.

diesels of that age don't usually have ACE.

I think all supercharged ones did have it.

I get 21MPG in town and 24 on motorway. (TDV6)

To be brutally honest, I believe that if you have to ask this question of perfect strangers, then the answer is NO!

Thanks all for your input. An example with as much SH and lowest mileage possible was always my prerogative, and i would always allow a set amount of money back incase anything nasty should occur. Yes i have had an insurance quote and frankly i'm shocked at how cheap it is, must be the benefits of my postcode haha. Smile

Had mine since April and done 5.5k miles in it now. It's been in the garage 3 times, but 1 of those times it was due to get ARBs done when I bought it so that was planned. The other 2 times was to re-route some cabling after I got a transmission error going over a pothole (loose connection), and to get the ARBs replaced as they originally fitted aftermarket ones which were crap.

Been good as gold other than that, and she's been on some long journeys. 82 miles a day commute, also taken it up to Yorkshire and down to Folkestone with no issues. I must have got a good one. It was on 89,500 miles with FSH, with about 4k of work done on it to prep it for sale. Some necessary work, some 'just to be sure' work.

I think if you can find one that's been prepped for sale properly, has had the cambelt done and gearbox oil flushed with FSH etc, it'll be worth a look. There's an excellent buyers guide on here too, should be easy to find with the search function.

If you're like me and you've decided you really want one, you won't be swayed anyway, so just buy carefully and get a Land Rover inspection done if possible. if you buy a pig of an RRS it could end up being a complete money pit.

There are plenty of horror stories about them, but remember there are plenty that run just fine too, the ones people don't post about on forums Wink

Running costs are high, but I've had worse at your age. I will say that after owning a lot of cars, the RRS is by far the most comfortable (surprisingly even better than the Saab and Volvo I owned) and I wouldn't want to drive anything else now.

EDIT:

It might be a better idea to buy a higher mileage RRS that's had some of the more major work done on it. An 80-90k mileage car that's had the works done in the last 10-20k miles can mean the big jobs are out of the way for a bit.

Oh and it's the cheapest car I've had so far in terms of insurance. £34 quid a month 20k miles a year.

The main thing is to buy on condition. FSH is great but is no guarantee - trust me. Mine had full LR dealer service history and has been a challenge. Much of this I put down to the dealerships and their staff. Buying one with good indie history might be a better bet.

With all of the issues, my RRS is still the best vehicle I've owned, parts bin interior notwithstanding. Whistle

Mine has worked hard for a living these last two years and it's been better for it in my opinion. These things don't benefit from living their lives on the driveway or on short journeys. Get one and do decent runs in it and it will be happier. Get it looked after by a decent indie and avoid LR dealerships and it'll treat you well in return.

Along with its stablemates the Disco and FFRR, the RRS is a great around vehicle. Comfortable, quick enough, corners well enough, tows with ease and takes off road conditions in its stride.

As for running costs, if you have to ask... Whistle 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Range Rovers are not perfect and LR dealerships are inadequate in after sales.

That said what vehicle has the presence to match an RRS ? None I'd say. That's why I shelved the idea of exchanging for an Aston.

They are nice cars when running but reliability is an issue, look at any forum or 3rd party warranty company statistics and the lack of reliability is blatantly obvious, buy the best you can with the most history, keep on top of minor things and take a warranty out for a little peace of mind.

Edit .. And a good Indy are worth their weight in gold Nanocom Evo
