Big puff

Calm down at the back...

My driving like a hooligan days are long gone and I now just pootle along, with the odd burst to clear the cobwebs. I've had my MY2010 3.6TDV8 since April and really enjoy driving it, however, I gave it some beans recently and noticed a big puff of black smoke in my rear view mirror.

It doesn't smoke on idle, or gentle driving, so I'm just curious as to what causes this. From my reading over the time I've had it, I think it's excess oil sitting in the turbos and getting blown out under heavy load ?

Interested in the thoughts of the wise and initiated.

Thanks !

Have you had a good look at the top intercooler hoses,, had this with mine a while ago. No warnings or restricted performance but a decent puff of smoke when giving it bit gas. One of the intercooler hoses was split,, not right through but enough to cause a leak. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!

Popped it in to Bell Automotive in Queensferry this morning and they hooked up their Snap On smoke machine. It gives a much clearer indication of where leaks are than the baby oil trick (I think it comes with special glasses).

I’d prepared myself for a new rocker cover and the associated cost of taking off half the top part of the engine.

Luckily it’s a simple case of the EGR O rings, so just a plenum off jobby. I have a fully cleaned up plenum and throttle bodies ready to go on, so will get them to sort it out in the next couple of weeks.

Could have been a much worse outcome, so very pleased.
