Never a Good Sign....

Its never a good sign watching your 6 month old RRS being loaded onto the back of a tow truck!!!

I was out all day on Saturday in the car with no issues. We were heading out to dinner on Saturday evening and reversed the car out of the garage then stopped the engine so I could hear the house alarm turn on, as usual.

When I tried to restart the car, the starter motor seemed to stick on but the engine wouldn't fire. After several tries with the same thing happening I called Roadside Assist. They arrived after an hour but couldn't get the car started.....some error code was showing on the diagnostic tool but wouldn't clear. Now the car was intermittently turning over but would stall after 1 second, then at other times the starter motor would just keep turning the engine over.

Finally the only decision was to get it towed.......not what I had planned for my Saturday night!!! 2016 Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic (Indus Silver/Santorini Black Pano Roof, Ebony/Cirrus leather, custom grey Style 508 alloys)

matsoutback,

In my experience every manufacturer has its issues.....

Apple
Microsoft
Dell
HP
Land Rover
BMW
Mercedes
Audi
etc

I would not be put of by the posts you see on here.........I would suggest they are in the minority of owners as a whole.

I have owned Mercedes, BMW, Audi in the past and have had issues (small or large) with all of them at some point. If you read the forums from these and other manufacturers you will see they are littered with similar issues/comments.

The main purpose of my post was to share the issue I have had. You never know if someone reading this has had a similar issue and can assist.

I love my RRS and assuming the issue gets resolved quickly it will not change my motoring experience. I'm sure you will love yours. 2016 Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic (Indus Silver/Santorini Black Pano Roof, Ebony/Cirrus leather, custom grey Style 508 alloys)

Drfox,

Don't get me wrong, i get the context of your post, balanced with your other posts which I have enjoyed reading. I have just never needed a flat bed truck with a car before (BMW, VW, Toyota, Audi and even a Disco), so it does shock me a little. I will also be very interested in the outcome.

Quite often a simple battery disconnect with these sorts of bugs can work things out...

My first accessory will be a diagnostic dongle, that is for sure.

Mat

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

What is the point of a diagnostic tool if there is nothing you can do to fix the problem - especially with a car under warranty?
Not many end up on a flat bed although I know one member in Scotland who seems to have a magnet like attraction between his Land Rover products and flat bed trucks! I've owned Land Rover products since 1996 and only one has ever not been able to get to the repair shop under it's own steam and that was one of the first Evoques delivered in the UK in 2011 when the battery couldn't hold charge even over night due to a Battery Management System software fault (seems too many of these issues are software related though). Probably my most reliable Land Rover is my 20 year old Defender90............ A model with a bad reputation for being unreliable, mine has only left me unable to move it one and that was during a very cold winter when the battery flattened. It even got me to the repair shop with a seized transfer case after I managed to punch a small hole in it off-roading and lost all of the oil - I managed a 45 mile drive to the specialist and it gave up in their car park when I stopped the engine.............. One new transfer case later it has run faultlessly since. Both the Disco 1 and Disco 2 I ran were totally reliable although the D2 shredded an auxiliary drive belt on the way to the dealership to collect a new car! Other failures can be counted on the fingers on one hand in 20 years. One BiXenon headlamp lamp failure on a 5 month old car (warranty replacement), 4 DPF sensors on my last Evoque in 2 weeks after a gearbox software "upgrade". Nothing serious has gone wrong otherwise. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Bad luck Mr Fox , having the same car specs I would be interested to understand the issue also. In relation to diag tools I own the VAG tool for Audi VW Vehicles and have found it great even when the vehicles are under warranty, good to be able to tell the dealer the issue rather than them fobbing you off . Also being able to personalize things like the number of indicator blinks, 3 not enough for me. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Me too (VAG Com)

It is a great tool, even on a new car. Customizing features and if you add something like a reverse camera (done a Golf, Tiguan, Amarok) you need it to program the ECU.

If you do get stuck, it gives you a heads up on what's going on, and sometimes it could be glitch needing only a code delete.

Update.

Had a call from the service centre to say the problem was an excessive build up of soot in the throttle body (the soot being a byproduct of diesel combustion). Essentially it had blocked the butterfly valve or caused it to stick which is why the car wouldn't start.

They have cleaned out the throttle body however at this stage cannot determine the cause of the excessive soot build up . They have sent a request off to JLR technical department for further advice.

The car is now ready to be collected however I have stated my concern that this has happened after 8000 km's and if they cant find the root cause what's to say it wont happen again.

Apparently my dealer has had a similar problem on one other car but not sure if it was a V6 or V8 diesel.

I will update the forum when I hear any more info from JLR technical dept. 2016 Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic (Indus Silver/Santorini Black Pano Roof, Ebony/Cirrus leather, custom grey Style 508 alloys)

How does "soot" get to that end of the induction system? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I'm not sure wilf as I'm no expert in these matters.

I am waiting for the formal paperwork to come from the service centre, so I will see what that says. 2016 Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic (Indus Silver/Santorini Black Pano Roof, Ebony/Cirrus leather, custom grey Style 508 alloys)

Soot, or exhaust gas re-enters the intake via the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). It is a system to help with emissions, but can clog up the intake, this can happen quickly if the vehicle is not driven hard from time to time, or on longer trips. From the sounds of it, Drfox has been on longer trips and the clogging up is premature. Might be an issue with the EGR valve?? Looking forward to hearing the result.
Thanks for posting DrFox.

Makes sense, so the EGR "input" into the intake air is ahead of the mass air sensor? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

As far as I know , the egr input is after the mass flow sensor. The delicate wire would not fair well with the heat and soot, basically exhaust gas.
