Just purchased some new 22 wheels and tyres (GENUINE 22" RANGE ROVER ALLOY WHEELS STYLE 17 BLACK)
I have been after them for some time and took the plunge.

Im slightly confused about the tyre pressure sensors though, Will the car pick the new ones up ok?

I have read some thoughts that you need to drive for 15 odd miles and then the car will register the new ones and all will be ok with no faults coming up.

i have also read though, that they will need to be programmed to the car other wise it will throw up a fault as since 2013 plates onwards (mines a 2016) the sensors are registered to the car.. If this is the case then either land rover can programme the new ones (god knows how much they will charge for that) Or i can have the original sensors put into the new wheels and therefore the car wont know the difference..

Anybody that can clarify the situation would be my hero!

I thought the system just recognised them without programing, fit wheel/ tyre wait and leave car stationary for at least 15 minutes then drive a for at least 5-10 minutes above 16mph and they should register.

I fitted RRS 2 wheels on a RRS 1 on a couple of occasions and that recognised them o.k. wouldn't have thought L/R have gone backwards but I guess you never know, why not fit wheels and see what happens, won't do any harm and no worse off.

Hi Michael,

It should come up on the dash display when you switch the ignition on and say something like tyre pressures set to light/heavy load. Have a look at your wheels TPMS valves are metal, standard one's rubber.

To be honest on the RRS 1 it is a £400.00 waste of time option as doesn't give pressure readout just puts light on if pressure drops to around 25psi.

That suggests I don't have TPMS.

Is there any benefit in fitting after market units?

The Government must think they are of value as they are a legal requirement on vehicles built from 2014 onwards!

The Government think a lot of things are of value, but usually ends up joe public paying , not saying it's a bad thing but is that not something else Europe forced on manufactures ?.

If TPMS actually monitored the individual pressure in each wheel I'd see the value there.

But a general alert has limited appeal.

TPMS is a by-product, if you like, of ABS and stability control.
It 'simply' measures any rotational speed difference of the wheels, if a particular wheel is going faster than the others (in a straight line) then it flags it as a low pressure. The steering wheel position sensor is used too, as when cornering, the wheels will travel at different speeds anyway. A flat tyre will effectively give the whole wheel a smaller radius / rolling circumference, so it will have to travel faster (more rpm) to cover a set distance compared to properly inflated tyre. Hope this makes some sort of sense?

Anyway, to answer you initial question, TPMS shouldn't have any issues calibrating to a change in wheel / tyre size...
