Suspension bags

Hi,
MOT time today- they told me my inside rear air suspension air bag is on the way out. Any idea what the cost of repair/ replacement would be roughly please?
Many thanks
Neil

The first question that comes to mind is "how do they know?" The air bag itself is inside a metal tube and isn't visible normally. He might have seen the gaiter that covers the bottom of the strut and thought that is the air bag.

As for cost, a strut (air bag plus damper) is £200+ for OEM, £300++ for LR. An hour's labour to replace. If you replace the strut, you should probably do both sides of the axle as you'll have new and worn dampers on the axle otherwise.

You can buy the airbag separately but then you have to strip the strut which adds labour time, obviously. It's probably more cost effective to just replace the whole strut.

However, none of this is likely to be required as per my first paragraph. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thank you. I've no idea how he knew. A friends son is a JLR Apprentice so he's going to have a look for me
I have just come home from 3 months away during which time the car wasn't used- it looked like it had been 'slammed'- ie the rear arches were lower than the tyres.

My RRS has been sat for a week and it too had dropped to about access height. I think it's just a slightly leaky corner valve and the vehicle has lowered itself by the "wake up and check your levels" routine. I just started it up and it went straight back up to standard height which suggests that the reservoir was full. A good thing.

On a general point, I think the air bags are pretty robust and seldom, if ever, leak. Any leaks are usually in the pipework or the corner valves. One problem is that the older style bags as fitted to P38 and D2 were prone to damage and failure because they were exposed; the D3/4/RRS bags are protected. Because of the historic problems, some people still think "air suspension air bags are rubbish". 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
