sugar glass windscreen?

So in 12 years of driving, I've had one bad chip/crack on my windscreens. 3 weeks in a RRS and I have a huge chip and three other chips on the front windscreen. I've done nothing abnormal (700 miles on the M25 and M3) - am I just unlucky?

They do seem prone to chips....and i don't follow cars closely!

I am on my 3rd in 18 months..... though to be fair, they chip easily but take large knocks very well. My last one needed changing when half a brick was thrown up at me from a lorry / HGV on a duel carriage way at c65mph and it just chipped instead of shattering! Shocked Now

Yep, small stone thrown up by car in the opposite direction three weeks ago, some moron in a Polo racing along a repaired stretch of road. You know the road sign 'loose chippings, 20mph'

1 cm chip with three 1cm cracks radiating from it, told its repairable by the call centre, Autoglass due next Tuesday. Half expecting the technician will say it needs a new screen, so another months wait. However if its repaired and the cracks get worse its on Land Rover insurance/Autoglass to replace the screen under their lifetime warranty and that saves me the £80 excess.

Yep somehow I have picked up a pinhead sized chip 2/3rds of the way down the screen recently too. No idea when or how as I don't remember anything hitting the screen hard. I wonder if LR owns a screen repair company................. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'd say yes, you've been unlucky.

Worth also noting that windscreens generally are thinner. The L320 has a thicker sandwich construction to the L494.

I had a little stone thrown at my windscreen, passenger side, at motorway speed by the lorry in front. Didn't get a chip, just 2 small dots where it hit. Been nearly 6 months and it isn't growing. Recently found similar dots on the driver's side too but no idea when that happened. They are just on the surface, not deep and totally cosmetic so luckily nothing needs doing. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

In Australia you can have glass replacement as part of your insurance, mine costs and extra $50 25 quid, which is a bargain because it is a replacement for any piece of glass and often side windows are more expensive than windscreens.

Of course we have a lot of roads that have gravel and stones , where I grew up the road into the town was called the crystal highway dues to all the shattered windscreens. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

My L320 screen is covered in small chips. There are two or three big ones too and a star chip. These have all accrued over about three years. I recently contacted Autoglass to arrange a replacement but once I insisted on an OEM screen they said they had to get authorisation. They haven't phoned me back as they don't want to provide OEM screens. I've decided to wait until MOT time and get the screen done then. I shalln't use Autoglass if I can avoid it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

OEM screen are very difficult to get but if you get your local LR dealer to do the job then they get Autoglass in to fit an OEM one, then you also get your LR 12 month warranty against poor workmanship, faulty products etc, but at the LR dealer price.
The pin head chip in my screen is small enough that I won't bother to get it done yet, it will manage until I can find where the local Autoglass has move to as their local depot is now closed for business, and then they can do one of their clever repairs rather than a replacement. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My car isn't 2 years old until May. Already on second windscreen, and this one has three repaired stone chips.

I am sorry chaps, I must be using up your quotas of good luck, not a mark on mine in the first 5000 miles.

Of course, you know exactly what is going to happen to me within 5 miles of home tomorrow morning.............. Rolling Eyes MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I had two on my last L320. First was after only a few weeks when a metal bar bounced off the bonnet and hit at a closing speed of 100 mph:

Second was from a stone. Make sure the rain sensor is attached correctly:
