Dirty thoughts about switching to a SC

Had my 2008 2.7 v6 for a couple of months now. HSE, java black with a really good interior. I've decided I Censored love RRS's after owning many cars, and I'll be sticking with them for the foreseeable future now. I'm happy enough with the diseasel, it does shift quite well to be honest.

Anyway my job is changing and now I can claim for nearly all the miles I do, so I care even less about mpg. Hey I've gone from a 60mpg merc down to a 26mpg RRS, might as well go all the way. I know I was recommended an SC in the first place on here, but hey I was too scared at the time Laughing

If you had a nice condition '58 RRS v6 and wanted to switch to petrol, would you go for the cheaper 2005-2006 SC as part of a px and potentially get some cash back? I've done that before - switched a saab for an alfa I'd been looking for and got the difference in notes on the spot! Or go for a '58 or similar age SC and foot the difference?

I'll be waiting a while before I decide whether to switch, just interested to see if the 2005-6 is a decent option or whether the 2008-9 SC is worth the extra.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

You might find that you can get a 2010 facelift 5.0ltr for a good price these days, might be long on miles, but they can take them and you will get more bang for your buck with slightly improved mpg and I think they also got the 8 speed auto but may not be right about that. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Cheers Tim. Seems they're a bit out of budget if I was to switch over in the next 6 months or so. I'd say my options are older 4.2 sc's up to 16-17k. That covers quite a lot of vehicles from 2005-2008.

I'm planning to upgrade to a post 2010 RRS in about 3 years time anyway, but for now I am craving the sound of the v8 petrol. Doesn't help that someone absolutely dusted me in one the other day and it sounded superb.

I've been having similar thoughts, especially with the current public shaming of diesel generally. Quite fancy a 5.0 really.

Not sure what management would say though: she thinks the TDV8 is a fuel guzzler! Rolling with laughter

Which it is, to be fair. Whistle

Did 27,000 miles last year which is a lot of fuel... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Heard rumours diesels are going to drop in value soon too. Might be a load of rubbish of course. I've done 3,000 miles since I got it, so probably on the way to 18-20k in a year. You only live once though.

I'd love the 5.0 but I reckon that'll be in 3 years time. 4.2 for now probably. Hard to find one with wood trim though, and a fridge! I could just about deal with sacrificing side steps, but I do actually use the fridge all the time. Perhaps the engine would make up for it.

The RRS 1 never got the 8 Speed Box as originally the 8 speed couldn't cope with the S/C power output, which is why they also retained the Stick Shift instead of the Rotary Knob, or that is certainly what I told at least. It was introduced for the RRS 2 though.

I went straight from a 2006 2.7 Diesel to a 59 plate 5.0L SC. I called into the dealership and told them I was thinking of changing to another sport but didn't want the usual colours of, white, silver or black. They suggested a model that was less than a year old at the time which was in the showroom in Nara Bronze. I walked around it and seen Supercharged on the back and said no it was no good for me. Then they hit me with it by starting it up and there and then I was done for. The noise was intoxicating and after an exciting test drive it had to be mine. I had the car for about 5 years and it never missed a beat. I took a road trip down through France into Monaco, actually drove on the circuit as they were building it for the race that was to take place 3 weeks later. Across into Italy and then back through Germany, Belgium, France and back home all in a week and the car was faultless. All the suitcases ( my wife doesn't know the meaning of travelling light) pulled the boot cover over the top and still had loads of room. I used the Adaptive Cruise Control at mostly 85/90 KMS on the motorways and when I got back home the indicated on the dash was 25mpg on the whole trip. You will not look back if you buy one just make sure a warranty comes with it and dealer service history. The only work that was done in the time I owned it was front suspension bushes other than that the car was superb. I'm lucky enough now to have recently bought an SVR but if they had not introduced this I would definitely be driving a new Supercharged Range Rover Sport.

No reason not to have an early one.

Just keep an open mind I guess and see what comes up.

I don't think they sound very V8 like, but I guess you hear the supercharger wine when you have you foot down.

I doubt they like doing less than 90MPH on a motorway.

Thanks all. I have to say I'm impressed with my 2.7. Taken it on plenty of long journeys now and it's been good as gold.

Andy, can you elaborate on the < 90mph thing? Or are you just referring to them being quick?

I'm not too clued up on the earlier RRS's, but it seems it'll be hard to find one the same spec as my diesel. For example I really need Bluetooth phone integration which some early ones don't have.

Personally I would be going for as new as possible, and for as well looked after as possible, stretching my budget rather than saving a couple of thousand on an older car. Clearly, a truly mint 2005 car with the right options would always be tempting but I wouldn't start there, I'd fall back to there.

As for petrol... totally agree it's the way forward depending on the number of miles driven. It's a real shame LR didn't / doesn't offer a 3.0 SC or turbo petrol with better economy (and lower purchase price!), but at the end of the day the V8 is where it's at.

Fun fact: As an alternative you could consider an old shape Jaguar XJR 4.2 SC... I had one before my XKR (before my RRS, so going back some time ago now!) and aside from crap steering the XJR is very wafty and dirt cheap. Unfortunately you do look a bit like Arthur Daley, or if you're a bit more suave then like Edward Woodwood. i.e. not young! And it was rubbish off road. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... I only live in Abingdon, if you want a go in a S/C let me know and just pop round. Don't worry about the 90mph thing they are happy at any speed on the motorway.

I got an xjr and was refering to that getting upto silly speeds without noticing.
I was wonder if the RRS sc suffers this too.

Thanks for the offer col - I'll keep it in mind. Might have passed you a few times if you're local and drive at peak times.

Jag isn't an option, I got the RRS so I could get back on the road after a spine op, I can't sit in low cars anymore. Glad I was forced to find an SUV though as the RRS does everything I want and more.

I'll keep a look out for the older ones, but if I can wait a few months and stretch to a newer one perhaps I'll do that. The long term plan is to get a 2010-2012 model in about 3 years anyway, so I'm not too fussy about age for now. More interested in interior spec and history.
