Knocking noise from steering

When I move steering wheel left to right, right to left or move steering wheel one way then the other quickly back and forth I get a knock that sounds like its coming from front of car.

When doing this motion I also get a flat spot in the steering as if the steering almost gets stuck when going round a round about or turning sharply.

Any thoughts or ideas what I need to look at or get changed? Thumbs Up RRS 2.7 HSE Stornoway Grey

A notchy steering action is likely to be the steering shaft UJ. Not unusual and reasonably straight forward / cheap to sort.

The knocking when moving the steering quickly side to side sounds like the dynamic ARB "characteristic". Does your RRS have the active anti-roll bar? Easy way to check is look under the cill below the driver's door. If there is a block with several pipes leading fore and aft then it's got the active ARB system.

The noise is one of those "they all do that sir" things that Land Rover sort of expect us to live with. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Nice one.. thanks for the varied replies, all very helpful indeed. Thumbs Up

RRSTDV8 - when you say 'A notchy steering action is likely to be the steering shaft UJ' would you advise best to swap out the actual UJ itself or to go for a full steering shaft replacement. Thumbs Up RRS 2.7 HSE Stornoway Grey

...in addition to recent answer from yourself RRSTDV8 regarding the 'moving the steering quickly side to side sounds like the dynamic ARB "characteristic" yes mines does have this and as a test I have temporarily taken fuse 9 out and the knocking noise has gone when I move steering wheel quickly left to right!!! on this note is this a viable fix and do you know what would require to be fixed to stop this knocking noise, is it a full new ARB system or any chance the noisy one can be fixed? There isn't a fix.LR say the noise is a "characteristic of the system" i.e. they all do that. Confused 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I know the hours still have to be put in to fix all this broken stuff, but with the help of the guys on this forum including detailed guides on how to fix things I would probably not have given any of this stuff a go... but there you go, another one fixed with help from this forum... lower steering all nice and light and driving as it should. And onto the next issue... Thumbs Up RRS 2.7 HSE Stornoway Grey
