Not sure why I didn't post this sooner or if it's even in the right section, but a good mechanic is something worth shouting about.

I'll start at the beginning. A Month or so ago we had a pretty decent frost and the temp was reading -6 on the dash, the other half was taking the Rover to work as it's safer than a c-max. She jumps in and it starts and then promptly dies, she tries to start it 4 or 5 times before coming to get me. Bit of gas and it starts and holds.

Bit of forum searching and a few TSB's later I find 3 (I think) that applied to my car, 1 for the engine and 2 for lumpy shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Now I always do any work on the car myself, if I can't it goes to Steve, now being as my car only needed software updates I thought I might be able to get my local stealership to do it and save myself the 3 hour round trip to see Steve.

The dealers said they wouldn't put any software on the vehicle without first diagnosing the issue, so my guess is I would've been stung for maybe 2 or 3 hours labour for a 10 min job, regardless I politely declined and arranged an appointment with Steve.
The day comes and I pop up and we have a general chit chat while he pops the new software on, engine updated fine but the gearbox decided to spit the dummy and fail the update.
Now this is where it gets interesting, as the software checks the temp of the gearbox before allowing an update I was basically screwed as with the software now being corrupt it failed the temperature check so wouldn't allow any further updates. Steve sent a quick email off to the chaps who make his IID tool, AMAZING service, they came back to him in around 15 mins with a firmware update for the IID. Bish-bash-bosh... software updated and all done.

Slight panic while waiting but, Steve and the other company pulled it out of the bag and sorted it.

If I had gone to Landrover I would've had a slightly different outcome. As soon as the ECU failed the update LR would then have said I need a new one, this is part of a valve block in the gearbox and costs around £1700, I would also need to buy new oil for the gearbox as the valve block is internal. So 7 litres at £20 a litre comes to £140, I would then have maybe 5 hours labour on top so another £600, this brings the total up to £2440 Now I'm sure they would find something else to sting me with at the same time.

As it stands Steve charged me an hours labour. The man is a legend, completely trustworthy fair prices and always goes above and beyond.

The guys behind the IID Tool are also great and should get more credit than they already do.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The guys at GAP provided a few features into the tool to correct issues caused by a previous diagnostic "tool"

Yes it was GAP, Patrick to the rescue again, after SDD fails it's software update.
