Timing belt changes - be careful out there!
Hi all,
I'm sure that there's a few people who have yet to do their timing belts or who believe in the 'can't see it, must be ok' camp....
Well as some of you know, I'm on my second engine after the timing belt tensioner /oil pump issue back in 2012 (thanks to a little persistence from me and LRs free replacement)
I haven't passed on time, but on mileage, after the replacement engine at 101,400, I was heading up towards 198,000 miles.
Bear in mind that since the engine was replaced, I'm the only one that has worked on the old girl, I've been very picky about who I was going to get to do my timing belt and importantly, even though I knew that I had the new style oil pump, I wanted it changed again anyway.
Because my work gets me all over, sometimes at short notice, I needed to get the timing right, so the usual site sponsors tours wouldn't have worked for me. So after other people's great feedback from Alltrack 4x4 after I'd sent some customers there, I'd decided to let Tim McKnight have a crack at it.
Can't say that I was disappointed at all.
The choice of luxury loan cars was a little limited but at least it meant I could carry on doing other things whilst he worked on it.
So, what he found, was this......

So this engine had done 97,000 miles, those leaving it for the 105,000 may be in for a surprise!
On top of the timing belt condition, (what could have caused it to be like that....) Well, he also found that the cam Damper (it has one on the left bank apparently) was as useful as a err.... Broken one!
Here you can see the outer shell completely separated from the rubber, so really not damping anything at all!!
Someone who was less experienced or less aware in changing discovery cam belts may well have missed it and I could have had another broken engine a few thousand miles down the road! So whoever you get to do your timing belts, make sure that they also check that!
So about £35 or so for the new cam damper and the next day I had my car back, running and after he checked a few other bits I'd asked him to have a look for, I also now need a new front diff (that's where my whine seems to be coming from). That's ok, because I have another one I'm just in the process of putting new bearings in.
All at a great price.
So if anyone in the midlands needs anything doing, give Tim a call on 01886 880905
They're in Millbank Garage, Hereford Road, Storridge WR13 5EN
