New '05 Black Supercharged Range Rover Sport (well its not new!) owner here, this is my first post. I recently chopped in my lil ginger 350z in favor of a tasty supercharged RRS with an impending first child. I was pretty active on the Zed forum (yes I know how to use search! )

First little mod I HAVE to get done on the RRS is to get rid of the head unit. What i wanted to ask is "Are there any gotchas?". I've done a few head unit installs over the years, but this one I don't want to mess around with - quick in and out job. I'm looking at the Pioneer AVIC-F70DAB, has anyone installed this if so how did it go?

Obviously need to get the standard shopping list items - loom, facia, 10 miles of electrical tape etc, but do I need anything in specific to get the integrated mic working, any specific tools, advice on routing the USB cable for Android Auto to work all that kind of detail? I'm yet to pull any of the dash out to peek so may be simple once its out.

Maybe not on first install, but I have aftermarket Alpine head rest units, I wanted to see if I could get an output to both headrests - any suggestions on equipment and cable routing etc? I suspect this is going to be tricky/impossible so not focusing on it at the moment.

I've not done the change myself but things to realise:

1) The audio is transmitted over the network to the power amp under the drivers seat.
So don't expect to find speaker wires behind the head unit!
I have seen an adaptor on ebay which I think may over come this, Not sure.

2) When you remove the headunit the display above stops working. No 4x4 info No sat nav.
I believe others have kept the headunit guts and installed it in the glovebox so the display still works.

On the plus side, many people have done it, just don't expect it to be straight forward. Do a search


When you do pull it out you won't find many wires. Only:

+12v (no ignition, use the fag lighter for that)
ground
remote out
CAN wires twisted pair
steering wheel wires

mic
aux input (rear of center console)

optical network

Because you've got Logic 7 you're basically over a barrel. You will need to re-wire the amp that is under the drivers seat, bypass it but leave it fitted otherwise you lose the satnav and 4x4 info.

There are leads to swap out the head units for the sport but non have been made for the logic 7 system yet.

I called them and was quoted £1800 (I cant remember 100%) for them to take my vehicle in and use it as a test bed to fabricate a new lead. The quote included fitting, manufacture and also the new headunit.

Hi gents, I have just fitted an XTRONS double din unit to my 05 RRS, it was relatively straight forward tbh once I worked out the issues mentioned, I bought an Amp bypass loom for around £15 from ebay and have everything working as it should, only issue i have is now my radio will not tune into any station, i know the antennas are on the back quarter windows but i assume they take there power through the amp and that's why I'm not getting anything, any ideas??

Did you connect the blue wire at the headunit upto the remote output on the radio ?

or did you leave it connected to the old headunit, in which case is the old head unit switched on ?

i will take it apart and have a look, I'm sure the blue remote cable on the new head unit is unconnected to anything, the bypass loom wasn't great if I'm honest but enough to power the stereo and to allow the speaker to work, ill strip it back out and get back to you, thanks for the advice.

No. Its the solid blue on the large connector, one of the larger 4 terminals.

Hi guys,

I requested a Chap who does custom car interior installs to build me a fascia adapter for the RRS.

This has now been completed and is plug and play with the RRS with HK.

It isn't cheap if you have HK (£399) but you basically remove the CD player unit, plug in the adapter, mini stereo etc and fit the iPad Fascia. Slide in your ipad and play music etc and you can use your steering controls even

If you don't have HK then it's around £199 I think...

I will be having mine installed soon so will keep you posted.

Followed that blue cable Andy and it seems to be as it should, it connects to "Amp" on the aftermarket unit, I believe this is what would normally be the remote wire but it is a random Chinese unit which conforms to its own standard, they use the CE certificate without certification but they say it just means Chinese engineering..! haha

you could check it is 12v when on
