Well darling, you owe me big time now...

RRS in for a new torque converter. Had a call to say that the output shaft splines are heavily worn. Result is that the gearbox needs to be reconditioned. Well, you can just replace the shaft but as everything has to come out of the gearbox casing to do it they insist on a full recondition to avoid later claims. Seems fair and a "new" gearbox would be nice.

Of course, if the output shaft splines are worn then that means what else is worn? Correct! The input shaft in the transfer box is also worn. So that's going to be given some attention too. New seals, bearings and transfer chain etc.

The bill is going to be starting with a 4. If I'm lucky... Censored

You'll feel much better about it all once it's done. Thumbs Up Trust me. Big Cry

Bill starting with a 4 sounds like a bit much though? I'd have expected 3, or possibly even 2? Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Yes, from figures I've seen posted on Disco3, I'd not be expecting any/much more than 4k. IIRC, most figures (from BT), which won't have included the splines etc., have been 2-3.5k. I don't know how much extra needs adding, but I certainly wouldn't expect it to go to 5k+ because that'd be the realm of factory recon plus new TF box prices methinks.

Hope it's not "RRS premium". Confused

Edit: Perhaps see what Disco_Mikey has to say, since he's been there. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Symptoms were an occasional judder from the torque converter. Not unusual once over 100k miles. Was taken in for a torque converter only. Found the worn splines when they split the gearbox and transfer box. Wasn't expected, that's for sure. Indeed I'd mentioned the odd clunk and poor shift but they couldn't replicate these so thought there should be no issues.

Gearbox and transfer boxes had both had oil changes earlier in their life.

I can't wait to get my RRS back - the loan car is a 51plate Passat. It's not a great example either, sadly. Ah well - "a second class ride is better than a first class walk". Rolling with laughter

Oh yes, it's booked in for a service next week too. An expensive month, eh? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I guess on the bright side you may be saving some fuel in the Passat Mr. Green

Buckster, we're still coming down to Exmoor and planning to enjoy the day. Thumbs Up

SH0X, it's a big job. Drop the gearbox and transfer box, split them, strip them, rebuild the gearbox with new output shaft, torque converter (and I assume fluid pump), clutch packs, seals etc, rebuild transfer box with new seals, bearings etc, put them back together and reinstall. I'd guess that's going to be more than 10 hours work! So parts, labour and the Government's "spending choice tax" aka VAT.

A little over 3 grand incl VAT. Gulp!

It is amazingly different to drive though. The gearbox is all but unnoticeable now. Gone are the harsh shifts, the odd thump and shunt. It did change during the two hour trip home as the adaptives adjusted. Be interesting to see what it's like over the next week. Also be interested to see if there is any change in mpg.

Gearbox reconditioned. New TC. Transfer box refreshed with new input flange and drive chain. The drive chain is 160 on its own!

Service being done on Wednesday - the problem with using your RRS is that services do come round awfully quickly... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
