Brembo brakes

I'm told that my front brakes require changing (discs and pads) at a cost of £480.

The Indi garage justifies the cost by saying that my MY12 3.0 Sport HSE came with Brembo brakes and they are correspondingly expensive.

Can anyone confirm that this makes sense and that I'm not being sold hot air? Also is there any way I can visually corroborate their claim?

The genuine pads are extortionately priced for the 6-pot Brembos... Aftremarket alternatives are available from the likes of EBC - part number LR064181 (or LR020362). Thumbs Up

Easy to tell if you have Brembo calipers visually:

The cost of the parts varies quite a lot depending on whether the garage is proposing to use Land Rover sourced original parts, OEM or copy parts. On my TDV8 which has Brembo front brakes the cost of Brembo branded pads was £63 and Brembo branded discs were about £120.

For a garage a disc and pad change is about one and a half hours work or less maybe (takes me a whole day Rolling with laughter ).

So that quote isn't cheap.

I would question why they only want to change the front brakes as the rears usually wear at a similar rate. Depending on how you drive the brakes last between 15,000 and 25,000 miles.

The rears are less expensive for the smaller pads and the discs are a similar price to the fronts. The rears should be completely stripped down and cleaned including the internal handbrake parts, lubricated and adjusted. This can save you a fortune on repair of the EPB module that can be damaged by maladjusted handbrake shoes.

You can easily inspect the disc condition by looking through the wheels. The discs need replacing if they show any signs of scoring or there is a lip higher than 1mm or so at the outer edge (the part not swept by the pads). There is a minimum acceptable disc thickness but you'd need a micrometer to measure that.

It is harder to see the condition of the pads without removing a wheel but if you look down on the top of the caliper with a torch and know what you are looking for the pad depth is 10mm when new and at 2mm or so are considered to be worn out. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I don't think the MY12 (apart from 5.0L supercharged) came with Brembo brakes, my 2012 RRS didn't have them.

Thanks Padi

£480 is for parts and labour and inc. VAT.

Should I still regard that as high?

If that price is for genuine parts, for 6-pot Brembos, then no, it's not high. Thumbs Up

The rip-off LR prices themselves are another matter... Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

If the picture in your gallery is of your car on the recovery truck, I'm afraid that does not look like a 6pot Brembo to me or at least it look's different to the ones on my 5.0l S/C. Is it possible some one has fitted the 4pot TDV8 one's, assuming they do fit.

Cheers

My 2012 sdv6 does not have brembos.
Had all new non genuine quality aftermarket front discs and pads supplied and fitted for £250 a few weeks back.

I believe this is supposed to be done at service but doubt they all do it Whistle Visitor from fullfatrr.com

Your indie garage is wrong. MY 12 & 13 3.0L RRS came with none branded Land Rover brakes from factory. If you bought you car 2nd hand, then there is a good chance that the previous owner upgraded them to Brembos. Do you have a clear picture of the brakes?

I phoned Lookers (Park Royal) and asked for a parts cost for front discs, pads and sensor. I didn't mention Brenbo but just gave them my VIN number. The parts inc. VAT came to £377. So £480 supply and fit didn't seem that bad.

It seems LR parts are just exorbitantly priced but asking an Indie to fit non LR brake parts seems dodgy!

So I bit the bullet and paid.

There's nothing wrong with asking an indy to use good quality aftermarket parts, and naturally, most indies will certainly use OE parts rather than genuine whenever possible. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
