Just when you think you are safe

Hi

After 18 months of trouble free motoring, I detected an occasional knock coming from the front of the car, so booked the RRS into my local independent as my local LR dealer was too busy. I thought there can't be much wrong as it was only a small occasional knock Sad

A few hours later, a phone call shattered that illusion - I needed both lower suspension arms replaced, the lower UV joint in steering column replaced, a front wheel bearing replaced, the front ARC anti roll bar was leaking so much that it needed replacing and the transfer box was also leaking so badly, it also needed replacing - ouch ouch ouch Big Cry

They also told me that the front ARC anti roll bar had been replaced before, some years ago and probably under warranty from Land Rover. It had not been fitted correctly in that the 2 clamps that hold it in place only had a one bolt instead of 2 and that one was missing completely and the other one had sheered off when they had replaced it and not bothered to drill and tap it out. The car has been into Land Rover for 2 services under my ownership and this was not spotted on either occasion!

Luckily I have a warranty with warranty direct, who quickly authorised for all the repairs to be done, with no quibble Very Happy
Although I do have to make a small contribution to the cost of repair - thank you warranty direct

The moral of the story here is to make sure you have a friendly competent local independent and a warranty covering the suspension components as if they go wrong, they can go wrong expensively. In my case I had no idea that the ARC anti roll bar or transfer box was leaking as there was nothing on my drive to indicate anything was leaking.

As a side note, my car now drives so differently, it feels so much tighter and nimble than it did before Thumbs Up

Goes to show the importance of a good indie and A plus for Warranty Direct. Current Merc GLE 3.5d 2016 model, 2011 RRS HSE standard
Previous 2012 FL2 liked but boot too small
Previous to LR's 3 x Merc E320 estates - fantastic load carriers and long distance cruisers, ultra reliable. Only changed as needed a 4x4 high tow vehicle. Did have a 1955 early LR drop down windscreen and fuel tank under the drivers seat; again very reliable and super rugged.

Hang on, the transfer box was leaking so badly it needed replacing??

Why not just fix the source of the leak? Not a cheap thing to just replace... MY08 RRS TDV6, Chawton/Black, sunroof, hk, 268k km

^^^^ Yep replacing the box for a leak seems extreme. Most seals can be done in situ !!

Was the casing cracked?

Hi

I did ask if the leak from the transfer box could be repaired but was told by the time it is taken off, sent away to be refurbished, it is around the price of a new one. I also believe the warranty company asked that it be replaced, rather than repaired as it now has a 2 LR year guarantee. As I only had to pay a small part of the replacement and then getting a brand new transfer box, who was I to disagree? Very Happy
