Tyre ratings

If a tyre has a certain rating (this is the speed rating letter after the tyre size) and you drive above the speed, what actually happens with the tyre? Does it overheat and start to delaminate?

I wouldn't know for certain but would have thought over time they would. I personally would not run anything less than "Y" rated tyres which are 186mph tyre and 110Y load rated. Although "V" would be ok. at 149mph and I think the load rating is 106Y

Cheers
