England 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
Corroded Brake Pipes RR Sport 07

Hi guys. My Sport went in for MOT and failed on corroded brake pipes towards the rear of the vehicle. Anybody that knows the brake pipes they are corroded on the v section where they go under the vehicle just before the rear tyre on the passenger side. Is this something a DIYer could fix or is it a garage job? I have been quoted £360 + VAT to fix this which I thought was a bit on the expensive side. Any thoughts, help and guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is a little steep. It's 3 house work, max, plus a little for materials.

For reference, I charge £125 + VAT to replace both pipes Thumbs Up

How bad are they? Can they not be wire brushed and greased? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Spiffing wheel centre caps available

Thats what i was thinking to be honest. Give them a good scrub and grease them up but to be honest, looking at them, i cant tell if its early stages of or bad corrosion. There are no cracks or splinters visible in the pipes, but the tester thought there was enough for a fail. I would rather save the money and do them myself but is it something i could do safely??

Please don't wire brush and grease the brake pipes on a 2.5 tonne car, it may well get it through the mot but its not the way to do it, and if they burst whilst braking you will sh*t yourself.

I have an mot station and when cars come in that have had this done to the brake pipes i always tell testers to put it on as an advisory. We had a guy in about 12 months ago who did this, we advised him about trying to clean and grease pipes but he wouldn't listen.... 2 months later he was back after it burst whilst his wife was driving and she was terrified.

good advice. safety is paramount to me with this being our family vehicle. are the brake pipes easy enough for me to do or is it a garage job. dont mind paying for them to be done, but £360 + VAT is a good chunk of money.

I also have a mot station & when we get cars in with greased or copper slipped brake pipes we always put it as advisory,,do people not realise that if it's corroded it is dangerous,,,,it's like when people come in asking for partworn tyres & say it's only for the wife's car to run the kids about,,I always think that they must not like/love the wife & kids.
