Anyone been on the M3 recently? 15 miles of motorway are being dug up between Fleet Services and the M25! It has a tedious 50 mph average speed check! The signs say that the roadworks are for a new "Smart" motorway!

What is a "Smart" motorway? Free WiFi as you drive?

A so-called "smart" motorway means variable speed limits and clogged up traffic. Got a puncture? Good luck finding a hard shoulder...

Say hello to a 40mph limit because a slow lorry passed through half an hour ago!

Just like the A12 near Ipswich. 10 miles of roadworks with no one working during the daytime and all lanes open but a ridiculous 40mph speed limit still being rigidly enforced. Roadworks which should have ended back in March but have over run due to, according to the contractors, the bad weather over the Winter

Hardly any frost this winter let alone snow. Why don't the DfT dumplings negotiate contract with performance clauses in them?

An update from my old post, not being satisfied with digging up half of the motorway, virtually all of it from the junction with the A303 to the M25 is now roadworks! Sigh!

I drove along the southbound southern section this afternoon and it was just one big carpark on the northbound carriageways by the look of it, all those folks on their way home from the Southampton Boat Show and the New forest/ beachs.
