Jaguar Land Rover to contract out production of future cars

Quote:
Jaguar Land Rover has signed up Austrian contractor Magna Steyr to build future vehicles for the Coventry-based car-maker as its own UK plants are close to full capacity.
Of the 462,000 Jaguars, Land Rovers and Range Rovers the company sold last year, the vast majority rolled off production lines at the auto maker’s plants in Castle Bromwich, Solihull and Halewood.
The company has a smaller operation in India, and in October last year it opened a 130,000-vehicle-a-year plant north of Shanghai with local manufacturer Chery Automobile. A further 24,000-vehicle plant is being built in Brazil and JLR also has smaller local assembly facilities in Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey.

I've said it before but I will say it again - this is a slippery slope. I trust the investment here is a sign of continued British production - if we lose that JLR are dead to me Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

All major car manufacturers build some abroad. It's a good thing and a sign of them becoming a truly major, global company.

JLR isn't British anyway; it's owned by the Indians and they just let the Brummies build the vehicles for them...

Magna Steyr have been involved with LR for a while - they make the transfer box, for example. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As long as a British workforce build it in a British factory and it's designed by a British design centre then that's as British as it gets now Very Happy

Tata are still selling LRs as British brand too Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

It'd be nice if it were the other way round; British made parts, assembled in the country of sale (including Britain).

Instead, stuff gets made across the world, shipped here, assembled, and much of it then shipped back out again. Rolling Eyes Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

LR can't physically make any more vehicles in their UK factories. I can't see them building a new factory complex in the UK to then ship product to China et al when they can do the same in China for much lower cost. The workforce are cheaper too.

JLR is a global business and global business goes where the labour is cheap and the sales are high. That's basically India and China these days. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

But LR is already doing great with the current set up so if it ain't broken don't try to fix it Thumbs Up

Anyway as long as the model I want is built here I'll buy it but I won't buy an import and I would like to see expansion of UK workforce - our economy needs it even if Tata own it Bow down Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Union leaders are concerned about the impact an East European plant could have on UK JLR jobs.

Union leaders are calling for urgent talks with luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) over concerns about job security at its UK plants, including Halewood.

“But we are concerned about plans to open a plant in Eastern Europe which could build up to 200,000 cars a year.”

Halewood employs 4,500 staff and is working around the clock building the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Mr Maddison said JLR is currently building a total of 462,000 vehicles a year in its UK plants, but it is aiming to be in a position to be able to make between 1.2 million and 1.5 million vehicles a year.

The union understands that JLR has narrowed down its choice of possible locations in Eastern Europe to four: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

A final choice will probably depend on the amount of financial support offered by potential host countries.
