I can remember someone saying only except a genuine land rover screen , can't remember why but it's probable due to quality or strength or both .

Autoglass will try to fob you off with a cheaper import - assuming the cheaper imports have started making L494 screens already. Make sure you get a genuine item. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Make sure you insist on a genuine windscreen

Don't take this the wrong way, but you should have made sure the use of OE parts was written into the policy before it was incepted.

It's not the policy, it's Autoglass who try to fit cheap to maximise profit. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It is always the policy. There are only certain polices which will allow OE parts (and sometimes they'll even ask for a supplement, IOW, the difference between the price of an aftermarket version and a genuine one).

Insurers are busy trying to capture the greater market share; a market which is looking for the cheapest quote and not the best benefits. Cheaper quotes, ergo restrictions.

Autoglass tried to get me to go for like for like this morning...

ummm NO ! my insurance states original equipment to be used...

But that may take a few weeks for us to authorise, order and source Mr Jones.

So what, get on and order it !

And I rang insurance and told them this had happened...

Autoglass gets the gig from insurers because they quote cheap for the replacement screens. I've never had to pay the insurer extra for a genuine screen, although I've seen that I can pay more and go somewhere other than the insurer's preferred contractor i.e. Autoglass.

Autoglass wants to supply the cheapest screen they can because it benefits them. Insist on a genuine screen and Autoglass will come up with stories ranging from "LR won't supply them" to "LR use [insert cheapo supplier] now so that's what we fit" to "It'll take weeks to get one". All lies and all told to try to fob off the vehicle's owner - note, the owner isn't Autoglass's customer, the insurance company is. The vehicle owner is just the poor sod in the middle being told lies.

There is an extensive thread on this subject on Disco3 and the hoops Autoglass jump through to try to get owners to accept cheap import screens is well documented.

Insist on Pilkington Optikool - it was good enough for LR when they designed the vehicle so it's what we should be insisting they fit as a replacement.

I had two screens fall prey to stone damage within 2 weeks of each other a couple of years ago. At the time Autoglass fitted Pilkington replacements. If I need another one, I shall be insisting they do the same again or I shall happily pay the few extra quid (about £20 on my policy from memory) to go elsewhere and they can lose the business. Their choice. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It won't have the LR or RR logo on it but it should still have the Pilkington name and details on it. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
