I can answer this completely, my car was a irish import, it came into this country on irish plates, I insured it through the motor dealers drive away 7 day policy. The dealer MOT it for me the morning I picked it up.
I then bought a uk registration plate from the dvla that same day. The dealer said it would be easier if i had uk plates, so i folowed his advice. I then took both the irish mot and tax, the british mot and a completed tax disc form, car receipt, insurace documents, irish log book, new number plates and everything else I had down to my local dvla office in preston. I was in and out within the hour with everything in english.
However even now the local motor factors can not find my reg number on their system, but online insurance companies can.
I dont believe the insurance costs any more, and when I had a Warrantry direct claim, I photocopied my service book and they never quiered the irsh main dealer stamp 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater )))
