Warranty

Our 2012 RRS HSE Luxury comes up to its third birthday in September. It has only been serviced at a main dealer. My question is, do I take out an annual extended warranty or put £ 200 a month into a savings account to cover potential future work. We currently have a 5 year service plan with the dealer. This will expire in 2018. I know that it is almost impossible to answer but I would like to know what other forum members have done. 2015 Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic SDV6

If you are seeking piece of mind then take out the warranty. My experience was with a Freelander 2 which over 3 years never saw the inside of a dealers expect for servicing, so in the fourth year I took the risk. The RRS is a bit different as the car is considerably more complex and more expensive to repair. If you can bear the cost and your car has a good history then you may decide to take the risk and save the premium. If not take out the cover. Only you can answer your question.

Difficult. Suspect I may be in a minority of one here but putting the cash into a savings account is really 'self insurance' and it is what I've always done. Probably if two other factors are true i.e.you can deal with most repairs yourself except where a lift or special equipment is required and you have the cash to deal with a major event like total engine failure: then go for it. I'd rather have the cash in my account than hand it over to an insurance company. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

My RRS has made heavy use of the warranty. The warranty has paid out more each year than it has cost. Much more.

The problem with these things is that you are, in effect, gambling. If you're lucky then the "put it in the bank and spend it if you need to" approach is great. If you're unlucky then the warranty is great. I appear to have been in the latter camp with this vehicle.

To borrow from Clint Eastwood: "you've gotta ask yourself one question 'do I feel lucky?'. Well, do ya punk?" Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Fair comment. Of course fortune plays a part and if you work your car hard then it is more likely that parts will fail. But remember insurance companies are not in this business to lose money. The most obscenely rich person I know (£10m house, penthouses in Dubai, etc etc) runs a warranty company - go figure.

Midsman, I have just extended my warranty with L/R, for peace of mind. I doubt anything will go wrong with mine in the next 12 months as it isn't driven hard nor has it done that many miles. (25k) I see this from both sides of the fence. Bank your money at £200 a month, ok, but what if something goes wrong at month 3? Is £600 in your kitty going to be enough to fix the problem? Who knows. What is the mileage of your car? Where as with a L/R warranty, if mine blows up big time, (most unlikely) Hyperthetically of course, then i have enough in the kitty from day one with my L/R warranty as it covers up to the value of my car. Very Happy It is a gamble, but i would rather the dealer sort it out. + I get a courtesy car while they fix it.

I did the same as Paddi when my Defender's cover ran out - I have spent so little of the money invested that I am using the cash now to replace a rotting tailgate door and all it's fittings and fitting LED headlights with the money put in every year since 2008. The savings account also pays for an annual service, Green Flag Recovery and the MOT. OK so it's not a complex vehicle like the RRS but parts and labour are still costly, but it hasn't cost me anywhere near as much to fix the few things that have gone wrong as I pay into the Defender account annually which was the same amount as the original extended warranty would have cost. I also use any of the three local Land Rover non-franchise specialists. Now the account has reached a substantial amount I no longer pay into it as no interest is accruing either. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Warranty Direct do not want my vehicle, 3 years ago I took out their "top of the range" policy, can't remember the name now, and paid £2000 for it, now they have sent me a renewel quoting me the bottom of the range policy, which is totally useless to anybody, let alone a RRS, despite speaking to them on the phone they have failed to send me a new and improved policy, yet they ring up nearly everyday asking me to renew, "renew what" I ask them, I still waiting for a proper quote, then I get put on hold and ultimately dissconected Censored Censored Censored Censored 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

Shakeapaw, what's the car's history? Have you cost them money? Also, as your car is coming up 7 years old and is a marque that has known issues you have probably been hit by the "computer says no" bug.

Shakeapaw, My RRS is 10 years old and WD are more than happy to take it on - they have quoted me £930 for 13 months cover on their 'PERFORMANCE AND PRESTIGE SECURE CARE' plan. Don't know how this compares to the plan you have now? I do know that it doesn't cover suspension components and they don't seem willing to budge in that respect. I think they stop covering vehicles when the mileage reaches 120k though - has yours?

I've just contacted my warranty company as my 6 months is due for renewal since I bought the car.. mine's with The Auto Group. Ultimate cover, which will cover turbos too, I've just been quoted £796 for 12 months.

I've had plenty of work done under warranty already since owning the car, far more than £800 worth, so this to me will be a no-brainer to continue the policy.

Mine's a 58-plate HST with a few miles over 73k.

Cheers..

Ian

Hi all

I have the WD Performance and Prestige secure plan for my RSS, taken out at 95k. I took it out last Sept for £790 for 13 months cover, which includes suspension and emission cover. I had to ask for the suspension cover to be added, which cost me around an extra £100 or so as I had to go up to the next level of cover. There were no issues about taking out the suspension cover.
You are right in that WD only cover vehicles up to 120k. From my conversations with WD, they have no set price, it just depends who you speak to - the more people i spoke to the lower the price became Laughing
I have only had one claim so far, an EGR valve, covered by the emission part of the warranty so worth the extra Very Happy

I've asked them repeatedly about adding suspension but they say it's just not possible with a car as old as mine... (10 years) I was more than happy to pay more as I'd imagine suspension is where I'm most likely to run into problems (mine is petrol so no turbo or timing belts to worry about) but no movement.

I'm still playing them off against WarrantyWise (who harass me daily) and of course strongly contemplating the self-insure option too. Problem is you read so many stories of them all being a shower of fraudsters that its hard to make a decision. It's not like car insurance where you know they're going to pay out if you have to claim...

I have cost WD £600 for a gearbox claim, that is the only claim I have made in 3 year, the car is now on 108,000 miles, they know this as I have told them often enough. When the last adviser rang up he told me the quote had gone into my email deleted folder!!!
How do you know this I ask, 'it's because you are using Gmail' he replied.
So i countered, give me your email and I will mark it as safe.
Sorry I cant give out personall email addresses he replied Banging Head

I will not be insuring with them, I am going the self insure route, wish me luck
