worn front drive shaft issues

so my car is in for a full service new rear shocks few other things to be looked at and I've just had a call to say my front nearside drive shaft may be on its way out, now warranty direct won't cover me yet as its wear and tear and I'm still in my first 3 months Big Cry

i have two choices leave it and wait for it to actually go and then claim off my aa breakdown repair or warranty direct or stump and pay for it to be done but with the amount i have spent so far these past two months I'm starting to get hacked off already.

if it was left alone and it did completely fail could this damage anything else or create big problems with other components

secondly there seems to be a few different makes of front drive shaft with genuine part around the £350 or a GKN AUTOMOTIVE is around £150 has anybody had any experience of changing this wether it be genuine part they used or pattern

it was only a brief call from the garage so i am not sure to what extent it is worn will discuss further with them in person

It's always that one that goes. Wink

Mine went with a bang and I replaced it with one of these: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/tdb500110...4961-p.asp Thumbs Up

Be aware that you'd also need one of these to go with it: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/lr024151-...2742-p.asp Wink

Whether or not it would be a good idea to replace it now would depend on how bad it is, I suppose, but it could go quite suddenly. It doesn't take too long to do and, for piece of mind, I'd probably have it done if I were you as it could cause untold hassle later on. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

The shaft supplied, BTW, was a Bearmach one. You can always be sure of great service from Advanced Factors. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

thanks for quick reply at that price of part yes i think i will just do it, waiting to go to garage in person and ask/be shown how bad it is and that will decide the rapidness of getting it done

yes I've seen many good reviews for advanced factors so will most likely order from there, I've read somewhere on that GKN actually make LR Driveshafts does anyone know this to be true or not as they seem to be same price as the bearmach ones

My front off side one went. Or rather it started to tick very noisily on lock about a year after a damaged boot was replaced. I got it replaced before it failed - didn't fancy losing all drive on my way to work one morning... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

That's what's bugging me I've not noticed anything from it but I will get more info when I pop into the garage, what are the symptoms of it wearing out/failing

In my case, I had first noticed it absolutely months ago - as the faintest tick, when cornering slightly, but not on full lock, and only at low speeds and mostly under light braking. As it was so slight and specific, I was leaving it to develop so I could be sure if it was the CV or the bearing. The fact it would not do it on full lock was making me think it wasn't the CV. Normally, they start to clatter on full lock. Thumbs Up

A couple of weeks before it went, SWMBO said to me that it had got worse but I never heard this at all. It decided to go suddenly at 6 in the evening on a Friday night with SWMBO towing the horse trailer. The carrier had broken inside and spilt it's balls. Fortunately, it happened just at the end of our road so, after I'd diagnose it, I managed to limp it back up the road using Rock Crawl mode to lock up the TF box. A new shaft collected from AF the next day and it was as good as new. Smile Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I noticed mine when driving in the multistorey car park near work. Had the window down as just collected ticket from the entry barrier. With plenty of lock and a tickle of throttle it sounded like the ticker kids put on their bike spokes! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

see I've heard nothing like this what so ever but to be fair my suspension has been knocking more than a woodpecker so that may have been masking it
