2007 TDV8 buying

Hi folks

I'm new to forums and love RRSs (and just realised I posted my question on the welcome page and not where someone can reply... Doh Embarassed

Looking at a 2007 tdv8 with 122000 on the clock. Think I could get it for £12500 which seems a good price having looked around. It's got FSH and is in good condition.

Should I be wary of the mileage and expect expensive problems?
Would I be better looking at less mileage TDV6 or petrols?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers!

Can you post a link to the car? There are lots of clever people on here who know loads about these cars but the main area to be worried about on a TDV8 is expensive Turbo failure.

Generally you might find suspension issues, compressor needing replacement, gearbox judder, alternator replacement as potential, issues so factor them into your buy decision.

Others will come along with morre advice I am sure.

Thanks for the info

The car was listed on eBay, but the winning bidder didn't pay, I had been in contact but missed the auction so got back in touch.

The ad was crap to be fair but having spoke to the guy it seems he's genuine. He is planning to relist on classified but hasn't done yet. I have asked him for pics which I will post when he sends them. I'll post a link if he puts it back on before then

Any telltale signs that turbo failure could be on the horizon or do they just go ands that's it?

Thanks

Hi, hope I can help...although every car is different in its foibles.... my 2007 TDV8 is now at 115k & I'm the second owner having bought from a pal 5 years ago at 50k. In my 5 year ownership, I've always had a warranty (Landrover then Warranty Direct) which has paid for 2 wheel bearings at 80k and an alternator at 90k & something else small that I cant recall.

What they haven't paid for are ARC bar bushes to stop the usual front end knock, changed at 80k, but not a lot of money to do. The rear bushes could now do with a change. I've been lucky so far with big things - no gearbox or turbo probs (aghh! don't tempt fate!!). Pirelli tyres do about 25k easily probably more. Battery failed at 70k - the original.

Good luck, great cars (..so far!) Very Happy

Forgot to say that I've always had LR servicing. Get a good dealer & its well worth it to make sure all fluids are correct spec etc.. Smile

Most of the reported catastrophic type of turbo failures posted on this site seem to be preceded by no warning signs and the suspicion is that they are likely to be associated with blockage or partial blockage of the oil feed or oil return pipes. Great care to ensure that only correct specification oils are used and changing oil at half the recommended interval are sensible precautions.

Other failures can be of the electrical control module incorporated into the turbos and seizure of the actuating rods for the variable vanes. A scan of the diagnostic codes should pick up these faults and they can manifest as lack of power and or smoking exhausts.

If you do take the plunge carrying out two oil changes in quick succession and lubricating the actuating rods linkages might just save troubles further down the road.

Many thanks Tim and paddi great info.

Im going to go have a closer look at it and a test drive, if all is well I think I will find a local specialist to get in on their ramp and plugged in etc before taking the plunge to make sure it's a good one.

Are there any important specific jobs that should have been done with regards the mileage and history?

These have cam chains I believe instead of belts so should be ok there.

I currently drive an R32 which has to have the 4 wheel drive system (haldex) serviced every 40k, is there anything related to the 4wd and diffs on RRS that should be considered?

Cheers guys

Getting excited Very Happy

An R32; so you're a serious petrol head then.

Yes - if the gearbox has never had the fluid changed (which is likely because it is not on the maintenance schedule) then have it flushed by one of the forum sponsors who travel around the country with the necessary kit. These cars have issues with diff wear especially the front which can be felt as vibration when lifting off at high speed. Regardless of any symptoms change the diff oil front and rear and the transfer box oil (easy DIY). For what it costs it is well worth doing. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Yeah love my toys in fact my fireblade has just gone 😢 to add funds for the new toy 😀

Good stuff so I'll have a look through the paperwork and see if any of the mentioned jobs have been done, may be a bargaining point if not.

And good luck tony!

Let us know how it goes

My next of the woods leeds.

I've also got a 2007 tdv8 with now 92k on, full dealer history, had the usual alternator and batter done. Gearbox has had the megaflush done so hopefully that's got all the bases covered.

Have a listen for knocks with them wheels, check it they are genuine ones too.

Also I don't like seeing the towbar attached when people are selling cars.

Well been to look at it...

New genuine alloys required, prob 4 new tyres needed, few small marks / scratches, scuff on rear bumper.

Seemed to drive fine. Suspension works as it should. Has been serviced every year but couple of 30k mile intervals. Sat nav lost gps signal. Drivers seat worn. Side steps corroding.

I guess if he wants 12500 for it, prob a fairish price with work needed, a mint one is still 15k

hhmmm, dunno

If some of the services are 30k miles apart then it doesn't have the advertised full service history. Walk away. Even bargaining a grand off the price won't be that worthwhile in a vehicle that can eat a grand in one trip to a garage!

There are lots around but if you're tight on budget then these aren't the cars for you. My 92k TDV8 just ate £700 at an indie for a service, some additional work including leaking diff oil seal, suspension bits, brake pads. Oh, and the power steering pump failed out of the blue whilst they were putting it on the ramp to do a wheel alignment. Luckily that bit was covered by the warranty.

A good one is fabulous. A bad one will hurt your patience and your wallet. Trust me!

Take your time and find a really mint, original example. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Agree with RRSTDV8. A 30k interval (let alone two) is madness. Move on - find another Wink
