I guess this type of ship won't chain down each and every car, (i might be wrong and if i am, would a chain hold a car at such an angle)

Heard in an interview with someone from the port saying that every vehicle is chained down - but as you say - doubt if it would be effective at 45 degrees of heel. Apparently when something similar happened before to a ship full of BMWs - the manufacturer crushed them all - not wanting to risk selling any defective vehicles. Don't suppose JLR will do that - just a quick wash and hope for the best seems to be the usual attitude! Yeah - they'll be fine. An amazing story. Seems no-one want to speculate about cause of the list but surely it can only have been shifting cargo or ballast or someone forgot to load the ballast (she was only a third loaded) or someone left a door open and one of the decks flooded. I've raced my boats around the Solent for many years. If you find yourself East of the deep channel when a big ship like that is too close for comfort the default safety strategy is to get into the shallow water over the Bramble Bank on the grounds that the ship is 'never going to come over here'. Can you imagine being in a small boat sailing across Bramble Bank and seeing that car transporter heading straight for you? It was lucky this happened in the winter because in the summer months there are hundreds of small boats making their way to and from the IOW at any one time including in the dark. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

I live down here and see the lorry loads of land rovers coming to the port. Normally pass about 6 a day, and it's usually 50% RRS, 30% Disco, with the other 20% FFRR and evoques. Can't say I've seen a freelander on one. |

Reports are that most of the cars are still chained to the deck - only the construction equipment has shifted. Wonder if they will try and deliver the cars if they manage to salvage them or scrap them. Not sure about taking delivery of an LR that has been suspended at 50+ degrees in a cold marine environment for a few weeks. |

Amused that the Daily Mail keep mentioning the Porsche Boxster as if it's something special. It was probably one of the cheapest vehicles on the ship! I see the expected anti-4x4 Daily Fail commentators are out in force too... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
