Help : Fuel Cap/Door

Help!

OK, I may be having what could be loosely described as a blond moment. Had the car 2 weeks now, and filled up twice - but pulled into the petrol station today, and could not open the fuel cap/door/flap thingy.

I am pretty sure that I pressed it previously, and it clicked open - or am I having a bad dream? This is not working today, and for the life of me, I cannot see a switch inside!!

All apologies in advance if this question appears to be very high on the numpty scale!!

Cheers, Mark

Mark, there used to an emergency release for it behind the small panel on righthand side of the boot panel IIRC
Try locking and unlocking the central locking a few times, that often cures things like this

I've just been out and checked my 2008MY Tdv8 and there isn't an emergency release any more! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

If you lock the car when you get out it also locks the fuel cap - that might be the answer. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Just editied my previous post Mark - newer cars don't have an emergency release there. I'll have to go huntling for it now!

P28 of the owners manual says you have to have ALL doors unlocked to open it........................... not so I can open the flap on mine with just the driver's door unlocked and the rest locked. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hmm, just popped out to have a look at it, following a meeting. It would appear to have got itself in a tiz somehow. When I got close, the flap had somehow opened itself during my absense! Very odd - and no-one could have tampered with it, as the car is directly outside my office window, with CCTV cameras looking right at it. The car was locked.

Locked and unlocked the car a few times, and all seems well now.

Is there any way this could have got out of sync?

Cheers, Mark

That's odd, Tim. I'm sure the newer cars still retain this emergency release feature.

Older cars needed only the driver's door to be opened in order for the fuel flap to be operational... .

If you need to use the restrooms or be away from the vehicle while refuelling: at the pump, close all doors and press the lock button twice on your remote. All doors will be locked but the fuel filler flap will open! Malaysia Boleh!

I can explain (I think Whistle )!

You probably have 'drive away locking set'? - Where the car locks at 12mph

You arrived at the fuel station and opened your door only? - Therefore the rest of the car was still locked

This meant the flap was locked

You then tried to open it by pushing it (fustration sets in at this point)

---------------------------------------------------------

Because it was locked it wouldn't open.

Because you pused it, you released the spring catch, however the locking pin still had it locked.

When you got to your office you fully unlocked the car to get something from the rear or the boot.

Because you FULLY unlocked it you released the flap pin, so as soon as the car was unlocked the flap popped open (but only slightly).

----------------------------------------------------------

We see this quite a bit. You just need to press the unlock button on the key or the dash to open the fuel flap. I'm only guessing that this is what happened, but you may want to repeat the above to see if this is what happened.

Doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with the car.
