All the tuning boxes do is chuck in more diesel. Doing this without altering anything else raises the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature)
This is when things start overheating and causing damage

A remap alters much more than just the fuelling, and is fine tuned over the whole rev range.
Although it is more expensive, it is much more refined, less smoke, possibly better fuel economy
