As the title implies, having the choice of fitting slightly better tires (pair), where the best place to fit them, front (for steering) or rear (for breaking)? |

Rear - not for braking, as that's done mainly at the front, but for grip and safety. Having the best tyres on the back favours understeer, being easier to control than oversteer, and a rear tyre blowout is considerably more dangerous than front. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Thanks both. I guess this is why the rears wear faster? |

IME, the fronts generally wear faster. I'd be considering the suspension/alignment if the rears are wearing faster. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Is it no longer the case that all tyres should have similar depth on 4x4s

In the ideal world, yes, but as long as they match side to side, slight differences, caused only by tread depth, between front and rear don't generally cause any issues. New vs bald MTRs, for instance, might be pushing it though! Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
