40 mph Signs; Pranksters

Anyone see this in the Telegraph?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/roa...signs.html

40 mph signs were erected on the A360 in the Rotherham area and a number of motorists have been shot with speeding fines as it is a 30mph zone !!

So far the Police and Council have not backed down on the basis it was a 30 zone. Tough luck if you were a visitor and were using the signs to adjust your speed - I'd be livid.

Of course we have the old rule that if the street lights are within a certain distance (can't remember what it is) they define a built-up area and thus 30 mph is the limit.

Based on that rule nearly every roundabout with overhead lighting is a 30mph zone !!!

I'd fight that if I wasn't a local. It's entirely reasonable to rely on a sign that meets the legal requirements for size, colour, position etc. Of course, you'd need evidence to back your defence but the fact that so many have been caught by it would be helpful. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
