tdv8 engine

hi folks , as ive said in a previous thread my RRS TDV8 engine is blown and I need another one , ive seen some posts on here telling people to avoid re-con engines because if they are not through a main dealer they could have been assembled with cheap parts and I don't want to spend 4k and end up with a bad engine !!! on the other hand ive seen a second hand engine out of a 2010 RRS with only 17k on the clock , but how do I know this engine is not stolen / damaged etc . I don't know what to do for the best Crying or Very sad any thoughts on this please .

Personally if you are going to splash that kind of money I'd want a warranty. I think it's worth spending the extra for peace of mind after what happened to yours. A lot of them advertise fully installed and warranted prices. You could go the breakers route and 9/10 times you'd be fine but like anything else, is a gamble.

Are you not tempted to sell the entire car with a blown engine as salvage on eBay? It may sell for enough that you could use your engine money plus the salvage money to cover a new car? Range Rover Sport HSE DYnamic SDV6 Velocity blue 2020 MY

Low oil pressure, cam belt failure, blown head gasket, piston ring failure, cam follower failure, radiator / coolant system fails causing engine to over heat, transmission failure causing engine failure

The list is long my friend

But not THAT long.... The tdv8 doesn't have a cambelt and half the other faults would be preceded by the car lighting up like a Christmas tree, before fatal damage was done. These are pretty good engines in the main but do very occasionally fail. Proper servicing and spotting some warning signs would prevent some of those though! Beg to differ.....
Lights don't come on, there is no warning signs and little if any symptoms of engine melt down. My well covered failure on a fully serviced 48000 mile (by main dealer two months before failure) engine lunched itself in 150 metres. Never did get requested failures report but it was believed a turbo oil seal failed and drained the sump in seconds, not even having time to create smoke.
The £4000 engine isn't the problem if you get a guarantee with it, all the engine builders I spoke to won't get involved in the replacement of ancillaries that also get damaged and even a LR dealer ended up fitting a third turbo due to debris in the intake system being ingested in to new turbo. So not only will the engine need replaced, both turbos will also, so add another £3000 to engine price. Also don't forget, if heads are damaged, more costs as engine builders won't give you parts they can't salvage from your old engine.
A recon engine from LR is £6300 exchange, then the cost of removing it which include body off, then while you are there, alternator, brake pipes etc, my bill was in excess of £15 grand. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Ouch!

That's severe engine failure! Makes my l200 look like the most reliable vehicle in the world (which it certainly wasn't!)

To be honest I think modern common rail turbo Diesel engines are the worst idea ever, there is sooooo much that can go wrong and due to complexity of the engine and the massive pressures required to make them work I don't think I'll ever buy a diesel vehicle again

My 2.7 v6 failed at 28k km but was out of warranty, no lights just noticed a big end knock. Cost for LR exchange engine and new turbo was £11k fitted. But was either that or loose 24k on the car so there you go grabbed by the short and curlies. Would definitely go for a warrantied motor or you could end up repeating the process all too soon.

my TDV8 just blew up, again no warning lights, just a nasty rattle, smell of sulphur and that was it.
£12k for new engine and two new turbos.

Like others have mentioned, it'll be petrol from now on.

I'd never guess petrol to be the better engine or I would have went the Cayenne when I was shopping for the thing! Really - it can't be that bad. I LOVE my TDV8 - best engine I've had for a long time, other than my v8 petrols Whistle

I also drive a tdv8 and hate hearing these story's but I would love to know how many percent of engines built have failed.

It's funny how LR just get away with it, if it was a vag in sure no questions asked it would be replace foc.

Id expect warranty and doner car details, also contact the dealer to verify mileage.
Make sure you get correct paper work. Expect to pay around £4k for a complete engine.
A trusted breaker or a specialist would be your best bet.

A complete TDV8 will cost more than £4k. The turbos are a grand a piece... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
