Just had 4 years working in Jeddah. Nothing wrong with Saudi unless you believe the Internet types views who have never been!

I've been involved with some Islamic institutions that are being funded in the UK from Saudi. I'm well aware of the reasons behind what they are doing, thanks. Wahhabism, the official Islam of Saudi Arabia, is an ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam and is where you find lots of the stuff that the West finds unpleasant/abhorrent - mainly because it's an attempt to be as close to the original Islam as possible and so is basically Medieval in its attitude to people. Saudi's exporting Wahhabism around the world today is no different to the Vatican exporting Catholicism around the world over the years. I'm sure being a foreign man getting paid handsomely (and no doubt tax-free) for your services, Saudi is a great place to be. Just like South Africa was back in the days of apartheid - I worked with people who were there then and said how great a life it was. For them, of course.

I'd no more want to be a woman in Saudi Arabia than I would have wanted to be "black" in apartheid South Africa... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

You have to be there to know what the place is really like. I was fortunate that I was based in Jeddah (returned back to the UK last year). Saudi is a split nation, the west being more cosmopolitan and open minded than the east. Many Saudis will willingly point out that no part of Islam promotes aggression, neither does it promote many of the so called restrictions which people perceive Saudi to have.

There is a fine line between religion, custom and traditions, and it is this fine line which much of the Middle East is struggling to come to terms with.

My wife didn't mind being there, she was treated with the upmost respect by locals and other, non European, ex-pats. However, unfortunately, Saudi is also occupied by many other ME & East African citizens and that is where the problems start! Not many Saudis are poor, they are looked after well by the state, but there are many people living there who are basically slaves albeit there options back in there own countries are probably much worse.

It's a changing place with the development of new cities where women do drive and not wear Abayas. However it won't chage radically overnight and will end up being a more split country than it currently is. Living there opens your eyes to the real Saudi and what the current King is striving to achieve, being involved in one aspect from afar will not allow such an insight.
